George Foreman defeated Michael Moorer to become the oldest heavyweight in history. This content is protected This content is protected
Legendary moment for George Foreman and the HW division. Became the oldest HW champ while wearing the same shorts that he wore when he lost the same title to Ali. What a great career arc that Foreman went through.
Even Whitaker couldn't save the movie. Just rewatched the fight. Foreman's punches definitely got snappier the further into the fight they went. Moorer just kept circling the wrong way for some reason. Tomorrow is the anniversary of Bowe-Holyfield 2, the infamous parachute crash fight.
The casting they had for Ali was perfect. To the point where if they made an Ali miniseries I'd sign a petition for that actor to play him again. Everything else was meh. Very hollywoody felt like they were just following the typical formula where Georges life deserved more nuance than that.
Yeah, Foreman is a more nuanced guy than how they tried to play it off. And Foreman himself sometimes gets a little too corny and affable in some interviews. It was a huge missed opportunity to not explore his relationship with Liston. They went out of their way to find a good actor who could nail Liston's demeanors and expressions and even had him do some light sparring with Foreman's actor. Then they did nothing after giving him a 30 second cameo. Liston had a huge impact on Foreman and how he became more surly and scowly in the 70's, so it made little sense to not at least touch on that a bit. However, Liston wasn't just some angry mean guy either, he had moments where he opened up and taught Foreman things about life, gave him advice, etc over a peaceful walk. The guy who stole Foremans money was a work of fiction and an unnecessary lame addition. Another huge missed opportunity was exploring the years between his retirement and comeback, he went through severe financial troubles and a divorce while simultaneously trying to be a better person helping kids and preaching. They rushed this part of his life just to get to the part where he decided to box again with the lights being cut off.

It certainly does. This fight stands out as one of the most amazing in the history of boxing. It shouldn't have happened, but twenty years after losing his title big George was back!
