It's a judgement call by the referee as to whether he thinks Fury was kept up by the ropes. It is possible to stumble into the ropes from a shot and not go down. Others have pointed out that this ref has stopped other fights sooner and with less punishment than Fury got, so I think there is an argument that the ref got this wrong. I personally think he could have called a K'd before he did eventually step in. When he did step in that should have been the fight over, he saved Fury from more punishment like he was Furys dad lol.
Fury able to remain upright almost out on his feet was remarkable. Also Fury KNEW that if he tried to clinch Usyk whilst hurt he would have put himself in an even more dangerous position so chose to try and roll the shots and use the ropes. The referee did a perfectly good job and NOBODY cried about the referee up till this moment. He wasn't a part of the fight which is how it should be. Both Usyk & Fury credit to themselves also fought a clean fight. It's clear if the round wasn't at its end then Fury would have got stopped after the count unable to defend himself out on his feet...but that didn't happen. AS GOD WILLS IT. Only Usyk nutjobs or Fury haters could find a way to complain about this fight.
If anything the KD should have been called sooner. Not sure where the logic comes from letting Usyk continue to unload doing huge damage, rather than allowing Fury a count to rest, is somehow "saving Fury".
I disagree It seems to be coming from his major haters who hate the fact he was decent enough to push usyk to a decision
But a fight is stopped to prevent serious injury, so the only reason you'd lament a fight not being stopped is if you are worried that a fighter suffered serious injury.
My issue was more from after the ref stopped Usyk, to administer the 8 count, it seemed a LONG time to get Fury to the bell
The ref did a great job, its just the fan girls and Fury haters trying to find something to cry about.. Fury made it 12, and seemed fine, showing that the ref made the right call…. Another good one, Rummy.
Regardless. Fury was getting pummeled for 20-30 seconds. He was defenseless. That alone should have promoted the stoppage. Doesn't matter how great his recuperative abilities are. In the moment, he was defenseless and the ref needs to stop the fight when a fighter is in that condition.
My issue is the referee's selective application of the rules; if the ref is to call a knockdown because Fury was being held up by the ropes then he should have done it much earlier in the sequence. However the ref only seemed to step in and call a knockdown when Fury was obviously out on his feet and the stoppage was imminent.
Fury's legs were holding him up during the sequence he was literally moving around the ring albeit stumbling...both his legs were buckled with the ropes holding his weight at the end. It's clear. Usyk himself even started to pull his final punch as Fury lay on the ropes looking into the eyes of his retribution. Let's run the hypothetical that the ref came in earlier and gave fury a standing 10 count....then 100% you and others would then cry that he saved Fury and let him recover. 10 seconds is a long time for Fury. It's the accumulation that really made him wilt an accumulation you're saying should have been delayed for 10 seconds. Long time. Can't win
