The ref’s actions during round 9 were clearly inconsistent and improper. Nelson ruled a KD based on “criteria” that had already existed several times earlier in the round. However, in the instant he did rule a KD, Fury was cornered with nowhere else to bounce to - about to be KO’d or rendered completely out on his feet. Nelson also obstructed Usyk multiple times during Olek’s assault. After the round finished, he also assisted Fury part way back to his corner. There isn’t just the trees here, there is the forest. Fury making it to the finish of the fight did not vindicate the ref’s call at all. Calls to stop a fight are made in the moment - when a fighter cannot viably continue and when he is also at risk of permanent damage in THAT moment. In arbitrarily choosing to rule a KD when he did, Nelson prevented Usyk from executing a fight ending follow up. Great fighters like Usyk also make prudent elections as to when to shoot their wad for the KO. Usyk made such an election in 9 and was robbed of his due reward/outcome (= stoppage or KO via follow up), but he still had to carry the expense of his efforts in round 9 into the remaining rounds. Fury didn’t “survive” round 9, he was unequivocally saved. So yeah, Olek wuz robbed.
You're gonna hate on him making a few bucks? Considering the quality of the videos it's a small price to pay.
The ref certainly could have called the initial fall against the ropes as a KD, just like he did eventually. He also interfered with Usyk several times and I found that very unusual. However the ref was correct in NOT stopping the fight. First of all, this was a HW championship fight and you have to give both experienced men the benefit of the doubt. If it was two young prospects then sure, protect the young guy. 2, Fury's recovery powers were well known and anyway it's not as if his eyes were rolling around in his head or he was on rubbery legs. The Arabs around me at the fight, who beforehand admitted they knew next to nothing about boxing, were screaming to stop the fight but I explained the 8 count rule to them.
No, I have no issue with him earning some money. When a youtuber has to put that on their video at the start, they are making paid for promotional content. It's not just because they stop for 20 seconds to say watch Usyk v Fury 2. It means the whole video is favourable to whatever product they are trying to sell you. So, question, what is Rummy (but really the ones paying for the video) trying to sell you? Well he's obviously trying to sell you on the idea that Fury didn't get saved in the 9th, because that is the most contentious issue from the first fight that may put off boxing fans from being invested in a rematch of a fight Fury not only clearly lost but also some argue was saved from a stoppage in. Which is why I said, "Paid promotional content... Enough said"
The rematch is happening irrespective of the original result. To suggest Rummy is doctoring his opinion based on paid sponsorship is a stretch, and quite frankly rather disrespectful as he's about as neutral as it gets.
Again, there is a difference between product placements, sponsorships, and endorsements. I have pre-opened the relevant part in Googles advertising guidelines. Add paid product placements, sponsorships & endorsements - YouTube Help And let's be fair here, Rummy is a long time Fury fan. But irrespective of that, I have no problem with Rummy making money. I have been a long-time subscriber. But I choose to view such content sceptically. As should anyone, quite frankly.
This all day. Why give him an 8 count at all. Why not let Usyk tee off on him. If the ref doesn't step in then Fury goes down. The ref got Fury to the bell by his actions.
People seem to be assuming that Usyk was just going to 'finish him' if the ref hadn't stepped in, like it was Mortal Kombat. This is boxing so if Usyk was allowed to continue, the ref MIGHT wave it off, but the chances are Fury goes down to the canvas. He could also go down himself to take a count. That's not a KO unless Fury can't get back up and continue. If he goes down, he has recovery time, might survive. It's a bit like the Dubious thing where people are assuming if the ref makes a different decision the KO is there. It's not unless Usyk couldn't get up and continue, which is not proven. Too many assumptions. A real robbery KO is when the fighter cannot make the count and they provide a ridiculously long count. Honestly, if you can't knock a fighter to the canvas for a ten count you shouldn't expect a KO to be given, regardless of the rules. Because everything outside of that is interpretation from the ref/corner/doctor and is flexible.
After having Fury out on his feet , landing god knows how many follow up shots and still barely being able to get a knockdown, awarding a KO victory would leave a very bad taste in the mouth imo
So in the moment you're worried that Fury is about to suffer serious injury because the fight has gone on too long and a stoppage is imminent, but the referee doesn't end the fight, and no serious injury is suffered, so the right call was made.
You've proved your own point wrong tbh. Risk of serious injury in that moment. The ref has to make a judgement call and since Fury didn't suffer serious injury in that moment the decision to not end the fight was correct.
So let's say the ref doesn't give a standing 8 count. Let's say Usyk continues to tee off on him. In a couple more seconds Fury goes down or takes a knee. The fight absolutely doesn't need to get stopped.
