Canelo took punches from Jose Cotto then he took punches from Josecito Lopez and then he took punches from FMJr then some more punches from Alfredo Angulo and then Larry Kirkland (stop me when I get to the year you started watching boxing) and more vs Miguel Cotto. Thee he took punches from GGG. Then he got pwned and far outlanded by Bivol. Most recently he took a bunch of punches from Mungia. Duran fought **** on **** various times and got hit plenty. What most of these fights I mention have in common is that the guys that fight aggressively get hit and sometimes even when they don't. But maybe you just started watching boxing...
He stays in the pocket too long admiring his own work and relying on reflexes, you can have all of the reflexes in the world, but if you leave yourself too much distance to have to move, then you’re not gonna get out of the way in time regardless.
Again you're comparing a prospect to proven great fighters that have shown exceptional defence against world class fighters which is a baffling comparison to make. I've seen every single fight of Canelo since the Jose Miguel Cotto and i don't really think a 19 year old Canelo is very relevant to this discussion. Yes Canelo got rocked as a teenager pretty much the only time i've ever really seen him hurt, but obviously he improved immensely and in his prime is known for his great ability at slipping and rolling with punches. Yes aggressive fighters do get hit but Duran and Canelo roll with punches superbly and have shown exceptional defense as i said against world class opposition which is the difference. And you're making a comparison to those fighters and Ennis based on Ennis fighting a 35 year old Avanesyan so yeah i think that speaks for itself. Ennis stands in the pocket too much admires his work and gets hit too often for my liking, as i keep saying yes he's got away with it so far but what happens when he's taking those same type of punches vs elite fighters of similar size ? Maybe Ennis can improve on his defence that remains to be seen.....but as of right now i believe he has to sharpen on his defence in the future once he starts fighting guys his own size who are elite. All in all i think Ennis is a good talent but he's a bit overrated but i still wish him the best and hope he has alot of success in his career.
Again everyone misses the point yes aggressive fighters get hit but their are plenty of aggressive fighters who also had amazing defense for example Tyson, Duran, Qawi, etc. Ennis stands in the pocket too long and gets hit too often for my liking, yes he's got away with it so far because of the opposition he's been fighting. But once he steps up unless he has a granite chin he's going to have to sharpen up on his defense.
We want a fighter who has Ali’s footwork with Mayweather and Prirog’s defence but also with Foreman’s knockout power. Is that so much to ask/s
I just think we need to see Ennis in with more top ranked fighters before we start making any comparisons or assumptions about him. He's had 33 fights and there's hardly any notable names amongst those 33 professional fights. I realize it's not all his fault for example Crawford vacated his belt although Ennis wasn't ready for that fight so that was blessing in disguise for him i think. Unfortunately the Welterweight division is a bit of wasteland right now not many big names for him, but there is some names that would be interesting like Stanionis, Barrios, Gorman, etc. I think realistically Ennis will have to move up for that real big fight he needs. All in all just want to see how Ennis reacts to getting hit by an elite fighter and i want to see if his defense can consistent against a top fighter aswell. Ennis for me stays in the pocket too long and catches too many shots, he's got away with it so far but he might not be able to get away with vs an elite fighter or a fighter his own size with power.
His defense is mostly just based around his athleticism and reflex it seems. Hes able to get away with it because of his size and power. Once he finally starts stepping up his competition his defense, or lack thereof, will be his major downfall unless he tightens that up.
