but could he have done anything better? If he had met Tyson in 1991 as ordered by the WBC, would he have won? I don't think so, it was definitely much easier for Tyson in 1996. And Bowe would always be the favorite, in fact Riddick could win all 3 fights against Evander. Bowe had more potential and yet he is lower than Holyfield both in HW and definitely in P4P.
i don't think "all" is a great argument. Sure, Ali and Louis could have been greater if they didn't lose 3-4 years of their careers. And Ketchel, Cerdan and Sanchez would have been greater if they didn't tragically die. But those are circumstances so far beyond the control of the fighters. I think this is more about things that were in control of fighters.
Not all I mention are atgs/hofs but simply boxers who could have been way more Floyd if he didn't do the fake retirement thing could have some nice scalps during the years he took that pointless layoff, imo he could have been potentially the first to discover Margarito scandal and stole Mosley victory. Golovkin and Lopez, don't know if it was a matter of timing or not testing themselves further tbh Tyson because his prime didn't prolong to the 90s when the division wuz truly hot Vitali because the 4 year layoff, I see most people choosing him as beating Wlad h2h yet his resume isn't allat Lewis and Holmes because timing Usyk, Loma, Beterbiev had they become pro earlier so prolly timing again Crawford but I'm not sure if it's timing-related because he wished to become undisputed by any means at welter but pbc/spence slowed the process by ducking the match or the divisions he conquered were simply so-so Lastly, but not less important, Tank if he actually decided to take sum risks instead of spending his career doing what he is doing
In a completely different, completely sports scenario, Mike Tyson could have been even bigger (and not post-prime at the age of 23).
While I don’t like to bash on Holmes I am genuinely perplexed how he gets a pass for the 2nd half of his reign where he defended against guys like Scott Frank, David Bey, and Frazier….. Marvis Frazier. He avoided his best contenders.... something he admitted to. He also fought his number 1 contender all of ONE time…, yet he’s a virtual lock for number 3 on here which I can’t wrap my head around. Guys like Marciano who fought their number one EXCEPT for one time, are far more deserving of that spot. But God forbid you bring any of that up.
Ray Leonard had it not been for the torn retina and other issues he had between 1982 to 1987. Imagine the wins he could have stacked up
For all we know, these guys all already rolled 6's to get where they did. History only ran their careers once.
He didn't "admit" it, he bragged about it. He was very proud of fighting little guys for big money, and told the press that if they didn't give him someone he could beat, he wouldn't be back. Then he lost to a cherry-picked LHW.
Gene Tunney. Without the color line he wouldn´t have any criticism and he would, most likely, beat the black fighters...
I’m going to show my historical ignorance here — it was “acceptable” for white dudes to go see their fights, right? My knowledge of the Jim Crow era is lacking. because I’d have been all about going to see those guys when they came through town. Incredible fighters.
