Papa Turki is going to own boxing and all the promoters will be dancing to his tune in the next coming years.
I ended my subscription to the Ring when ODLH bought it, and I am not sure new ownership is going to change my mind.
Given Ring has the most widely accepted rankings this is just another move to become the boxing tsar. Now he has a formal rankings vehicle to pursue whatever his agenda is. If he can overpay the guys Ring ranks high to fight each other he can potentially use this as catylyst to either break the alphabet bodies or force them to not stray from his rankings. This means regardless how many sanctioning belts there are belts would usually be undisputed like it was before the 60s. I do think this is a case of the "grass being always greener" and fans wouldn't enjoy their being one belt in each division. The hunger for undisputed comes with frustration with the current system. One belt would make the padded record situation a nightmare. Right now the belts serve as a filter system for all these padded records. Take those away you've got a problem. In terms of always seeing 1 v 2 this is great. Everyone below that will be avoiding each other until they can get a title fight. And if theres close title fights and rematches? It snowballs even worse. At HW an era that provides an example of what this could look like is the 50s where due to their being 1 belt and a bunch of rematches the division was horribly clogged. Right now the Ring title goes to the most credible alphabet champ and its a reactive organization but if you combined the Rings credibility with the ability to dictate matchmaking it can become more than that. IMO this will solve some problems while creating new ones.
Promoter in MMA means something totally different than boxing cause the promoters control the belts. They aren't positioning their fighters to get title shots they control the whole process. Since the Pride merger Strikeforce and Bellator were peer organizations of the UFC at the top level. At this point it doesn't matter if an organization actually has a UFC level roster when most people think of MMA they think of the UFC. In boxing promoters fighting a Dana White would be much easier because they just need to acquire the talent. In MMA if you steal all of Danas talent he still has the UFC name and the UFC belts and all the history and tradition that they have which a new promoters belt doesn't.
I thought it was a reference to the journalist that was murdered by the family that Turki represents...
I have that issue. The magazine is only digital now which blows. My subscription ran out recently and my magazine service is not offering it anymore so I am pretty much done after more than 50 years. Haven't been able to even get on the website the last couple days only the app on my phone. I miss boxing magazines
I hope for the best with this sale. I read there may be a printed Ring Magazine in the future. But I am currently a digital subscriber and locked out of my account. (Like others I am sure) This is not a good start. I was billed just a week ago and feel left out in the lurch. Anyone else?
