It's Nelson for me by quite a bit. Quartey had the talent but took five years off during his prime. Had he got the decision against Oscar, things might have been different.
I think the top tier is very close and then there’s a dropoff: 1. Azumah 2. Tiger 3. Mitchell 4. Everybody else
This. Based on all-around ability, Nelson would be the top pick IMO. But based on pure resume/achievement, Tiger would rank higher IMO.
Quartey was awesome but he lost to all the best fighters he fought. Dick Tiger definitely has a much better case as being the best fighter from Africa next to Azumah Nelson. Deeper resume and better wins.
Azumah Nelson. And I understand why some would say Dick Tiger, but Azumah is who I actually know from a contemporary standpoint, he's who I've seen. I gotta go with him.
Had to double check where Sakio Bika was born. He was born in Cameroon Not likely to get a look in on this list, but worth a mention. He was an extremely tough dude and a hard nights work for anyone Ask Calzaghe and he will say the same. Tough, strong, dirty boxer
Cerdan is not being mentioned but I’d bet that’s because no one here considers him African in a meaningful sense.
Quartey is actually my favorite fighter from Africa. But fave and greatest are two different things. What he accomplished, then failed to.......pales in comparison to what I saw from The Professor and what I know of the legend of Dick Tiger
