Both are the guys who got embarrassed(or I should say went competitive with him..)by Benitez. Palomino did lost a close, and while clear by many still not that convincing(unlike his next 2 losses) Leonard,by many accounts was having a hard time and probably almost loses if the referee didn't stop Benitez in the final round. Palomino had a good slow starting style that slowly punish the body and head over and over, pounding with good punch selection until your body surrenders. Leonard is just Pryor and Ali mixed,he can do everything and he had enough skills to survive the inside. Who's the winner?
Ah man, Ray was winning going away. Have you ever watched the fight? He was up by 2, 7 and 4 points with 6 seconds left in the fight and Benitez coming off the floor. Do you think in that position he probably almost loses? Leonard put on a boxing clinic against a great boxer.
To be fair, Palomino wasn't really "embarrassed" by Benitez, either. That said, he isn't beating Leonard at 147, who probably stops him.
Hi Buddy. Agree with your assertion that Palomino was not embarrassed by the loss, tentatively disagree that Leonard would " probably " stop him, Carlos had an ATG chin, along with other WWs such as, Ross, Basilio, Armstrong, Robinson, etc, so I see Ray winning a clear decision over 15, Palomino was a tad pedestrian at times, and the slicker, quicker, Leonard would exploit this. Stay safe MM, and keep your informative, and interesting posts coming please. chat soon matey.
Ray outboxes Carlos but does n't stop him. The former was outboxing Benitez comprehensively which is some achievement considering how good 'El Radar' was at that point. Carlos gave him a good fight enroute to losing decision.
I'd go with SRL in a UD or very late stoppage--(14th or 15th round)--he had a bit too much in his arsenal for Palomino.
As much as I like Carlos and dislike Leonard, I think if they fought while Carlos was still champ, SRL would have taken the decision. Carlos was a slow starter who depended on his stamina in the late rounds. Leonard would have compiled a big lead early but he also had stamina and would have withstood Carlos's final push. I think this fight would be closer than many people think but I see Leonard winning along the lines of 146-143 or in that neighborhood. I don't think there would be any knockdowns and I don't see Ray stopping him.
Very strange stoppage. Leonard would have won anyway but Benitez did not appear badly hurt and was bobbing and weaving away from Leonard's punches when the fight was stopped. I wonder how many gamblers were pulling their hair out if they bet the fight would go the distance.
