A bit of fun, but now Mike Tyson has officially returned to boxing…does he have the best resume out of the active heavyweights?

He fought 9 of 10 of his peers in the Ring Ratings from 1986: eight wins and one loss and became undisputed champion. A formidable resume:
    Ring Ratings (1986)
    C. Michael Spinks (W)
    1. Mike Tyson (-)
    2. Bonecrusher Smith (W)
    3. Pinklon Thomas (W)
    4. Tim Witherspoon (-)
    5. Tony Tubbs (W)
    6. Trevor Berbick (W)
    7. Buster Douglas (L)
    8. Tony Tucker (W)
    9. Frank Bruno (W)
    10. Tyrell Biggs (W)

    Of the current/recent crop:
Usyk’s best year would be 2024 (current) with three of his peers being included in the rankings (Fury (W), Dubois (W), Joshua (W)) and is also an undisputed heavyweight champion
Dubois’ best year would be 2024 (current) with three (Usyk (L), Joshua (W), Hrgovic (W))
Zhang’s best year would be 2023 with four (Parker (L), Hrgovic (L), Joyce (W), Wilder (W))
Fury’s best year would be 2022 with three (Usyk (L), Wilder (D), Whyte (W))
Parker’s best year would be 2022 with four (Wilder (W), Joshua (L), Ruiz Jr. (W), Whyte (L))
Ruiz Jr.’s best year would be 2018 with four (Joshua (W), Ortiz (W), Parker (L), Miller (D))
Joshua’s best year would be 2017 with six (Parker (W), Povetkin (W), Pulev (W), Ruiz Jr. (L), Whyte (W), Breazeale (W))
Wilder’s best year would be 2016 with four (Fury (D), Ortiz (W), Parker (L), Stiverne (W))

It is semi-tongue-in-cheek and semi-serious. But also paying homage to what he did achieve.

    Yes by a mile
Usyk/fury would need to beat more guys to rank higher as a heavyweight

This isn't a p4p list before the usyk fans cry
Tyson beat many capable guys and pretty much read out his division while fighting more than once per year

Aj and Fury are nothing special. They receive such hype due to the boring reign of the brothers and fans have been overrating them since. Social media also helps push fighters now

Some of the fighters were skilled and had very good fundamentals and Tyson ran through the majority of them

He didn't shine for long, but for a few years he was a wrecking machine

Fury at his best is damn good. A top ATG? Nah. But a rough fight, for anyone of any era? Absolutely.

Fury hasn't been at his best in a while and I disagree. He's awkward, but benefits from a bad era

He's had too many ropey performances and the only great fighter on his resume is 39 year old man

    Yes.

This eras defining feature is the champs having terrible resumes.

Not sure if Tyson's resume if better than Usyk. He has more depth but not necessarily better wins. I will take Joshua and Dubois over Berbick, Thomas, Smith, Spinks etc. I will take Fury over Bruno and Ruddock. But Tyson has more top wins.

What makes Tyson a top 10 all time heavyweight isn't necessarily his resume but his combination of exceptional speed, power and defensive and offensive skills. As much as i love Usyk, he couldn't have kept a rampaging Tyson off him given Tyson was quicker than he is. H2H, Tyson, while not unbeatable, was an absolute monster. I would favour prime Tyson over any of the top 10 guys today.

It maybe an argument if he has the best resume over todays active Heavyweights but what’s not an argument is how often he fought even as Champion,he absolutely shows every active Heavyweight up in that respect !

Yes. So weird to see him ranked on BoxRec in 2024. Number 78 among American heavyweights.

    I,d say yes.

I still say tysons era was actually much better than most people remember if you actually watch them fight as opposed to look at their record

Their biggest problem was unlike today they actually fought each other and there we,re more of them. People end up looking at their records and compare it to todays fighters who pretty much pad their records a lot more.

Tbf usyk and fury are good. Chucking anyone from about twenty fighters tyson beat in with the rest of them. None of them fights would be a given for joshua, dubois, zhang, parker etc.

The skill level and ability to take a punch has went backwards massively since then imo. Mainly because these madmen sparred competetively ridiculous amounts to get good as opposed to sport science.

Fury and Usyk easily beat any of those. Even AJ beats a lot of them too.
If those opponents were held to the same scrutiny as you see now, it would be a different narrative for Tyson.

Oh, yeah, Tyson also just lost to a Youtuber who took up boxing as a grown man and isn't even a real cruiser. People were trashing Fury for getting KD'd by a 250lb MMA champion. Tyson was old but it still looks terrible.
