Liston fought and beat Williams with a broken nose.
Went the distance and lost a split decision against Marshall ,fighting under the handicap of a broken jaw.
Marciano stopped 6 men 190lbs or over.
    Liston about 16.
    Marciano stopped 22 men under 190lbs,15 under185lbs,7 under 180lbs.

    it's not stupid at all.

Yes Marciano beat fighters technically better than Williams but were either of them in their primes ? or were any of them technically Heavyweights in the modern era ?

The only notable names Marciano beat over 200 pounds was Cockell who had glandular problems which caused him to put on weight hence his physique and a totally past it Louis.

So none of them fights really convince me of Marciano's H2H ability against considerably bigger prime Heavyweights.

I've never disputed Marciano wouldn't be the favourite over Williams but i am disputing there is a lack of evidence of Marciano fighting prime world class 200+ pound Heavyweights.

Williams was 6'2 with an 80 inch reach and hit hard he would be a significant threat to Marciano.

    Round One. DING!

Sleeping guy wakes at the bell sound on the TV: "Huh? Think I heard a bell. Is the fight starting?"

2nd guy: "The Rock already got him, Bud. Fight's over. Go back to sleep."

This. Williams was definitely in his prime when he fought Satterfield. An excellent manager like Viscusi would've never put Williams in the ring against Satterfield if he didn't think Williams had a good chance at winning. What got Williams stopped against Satterfield wasn't him being green, but him not following the game plan. He decided to slug with Satterfield, which wasn't a good idea. Years later he made the exact same mistake with Liston twice and got bombed out twice. Even against Ali he fought a stupid fight and didn't last long.

Williams despite his size, power, and potential showed throughout his career an inability to focus and adapt in the ring against top competition, which is a big problem when facing a guy like Marciano.

Here is a short piece from 1954 summarizing his fight with Satterfield and pointing out how Williams failed to follow instructions and tried to slug with Satterfield.

The fight was a corker while it lasted. Williams, a huge fellow and a game one, won the first round with a jolting left jab following his pre-fight instructions perfectly. In the second round he stood up under two booming right-hands from Satterfield and figured he didn't have to worry about his opponent's punching power. It was a fatal mistake.

He tried to slug with Satterfield in the third round and landed a good left hook. He landed a good left hook. He was shaken up by Satterfield's countering left hook and floored with an overhand right. He took an eight count on his knees and got up.

Here is a piece 1959 summarizing his fight with Liston with Williams against not following instructions and getting bad results.

Liston, a 3-1 favorite, dropped Williams for an eight-count with a solid left hook in the third round. Williams went down again seconds later under a barrage of punches and struggled to his feet at the count of nine. That's when referee Jimmy Peerless halted the fight to save Williams from further punishment.

"I got the idea that I could slug him." said Williams, who suffered his first defeat in his last 12 starts and only the third of his 47-fight career. "That's where I made my mistake."

Here is a piece in 1966 with Williams reflecting on his mistake that got him stopped against Ali.

"I made one big mistake," said Cleveland Williams, wiping his bruised and bloody mouth. "I dropped my left hand and he nailed me. I don't know why I did it."

The 33-year-old Houston fighter, who had just succumbed to Cassius Clay's vicious attack and lost his big chance at the world's heavyweight championship, said he wasn't badly hurt at the time referee Harry Kessler of St. Louis stopped the fight and awarded Clay a technical knockout in the third round.

But he wasn't too sure about the stinging right that floored him in the second round... the one where he dropped his left. It put him on the way down.

Williams did not take issue with the referee for stopping the fight, however, Kessler said Williams' eyes were glassy and he wasn't defending himself.

"But he thought I was hurt and it's his job to decide," said Williams softly.

No, it's because Archie Moore already beat the **** out of all the good 6'2 6'3 210-220 pound boys. And then Marciano beat Moore. And Marciano by his own admission and by Charlie Goldmans own admission was made to fight taller fighters. This isn't a competitive fight. Williams did not prove himself against someone of Marciano's calibre. You are overrating size. Reread my post.

Lol Marciano stopped one opponent of note in the first..... who likely took a dive but yeah I'm sure he's gonna do what Liston couldn't and stop Williams in the first. What happened to this place?

I'm not overrating size I'm saying there's a lack of evidence of Marciano against world class prime Heavyweights over 200 pounds.

I've already said I make Marciano the favourite over Williams but my comment above still stands.

Marciano took numerous rounds to beat smaller fighters so I find it hard to fathom Marciano is stopping a considerably bigger world class Heavyweight in a few rounds.
