Ron Lyle started his boxing career at the age of 30 (training in jail for maybe 2-7 years), which raises the question of how great he could have been if he had started earlier. Despite his late start, he competed with the heavyweight elite, like Muhammad Ali (start at 12) and George Foreman (start at 15), but the lack of youthful experience and refined technique often worked against him. Could earlier training have made him a world champion and one of the greatest in history?

No. Just no. Again I do not understand the abject worship people on this forum have for this guy.

The short answer is yes, potentially. Even moreso if we imagine a scenario where he not only had a proper pedigree & start, but were born into a less competitive era. If we set that impossibility aside though, I still say we cannot overstate what a barrier - truly, a colossal, Everest-sized handicap - turning pro at 29/30 is, let alone into the 1970’s.

He had no business making a name for himself at all. You bring Lyle through the ams as a teen & have him ready to turn pro by about age twenty, & he could be champion. He could build a legacy, albeit he would always be on the smaller size of scale when discussing ATG’s (think Patterson-level).

Ali wouldn’t be an all-time great if he turned pro at 30 either.

I can't imagine having a heavyweight champion now who started boxing at the age of 30. You may not consider Lyle to be someone above average, and you're entitled to that opinion, but starting boxing at the age of 20 is sometimes already too late to develop solid technique, let alone starting at 30.

Lyle is not a HW ATG.
When it's not Norton who lacked ONE WIN over: Ali, Foreman, Frazier, or Holmes (or maybe a win over Lyle); even less is HW ATG Lyle.
That Norton was declared the winner of the fight Norton Vs. Ali 3, would be HW ATG.
Imho Lyle is two wins short of being HW ATG. If Lyle only beat Foreman he wouldn't be HW ATG, just like Young isn't.

Ron Lyle started his professional boxing career at the age of 30, and reached the challenger of the world champion; which is impressive data.
But the information that he trained in prison between two and seven years is imprecise, and a very different fact.
Foreman was the Olympic HW champion with two years of training.

How great do you imagine Frazier or Ali becoming if they turned pro at 30? Not gonna happen for them.

The answer is yes in most cases for all the best material in the top contenders of the day, prospects even and good amateurs the way is education nothing else, If Ron Lyle got the education of Louis he’d be better no doubt.
