He was very strong. His legs were huge. He was an iceman logging blocks of ice up and down steps all day.
He was clearly strong as an ox. You don’t give fit heavyweights a hard time and deck Joe Louis if you’re some butterball. He was probably 180-190 of solid muscle if not fat.
You can see the rounds he did, who he beat and see that he was a professional capable of fighting championship rounds he was in condition for boxing that’s all he needed to be, yes he carried useless weight but it could’ve helped on the inside?
This says it all. I think this is the all-time definitive source of information about Tony Galento. I don't think another thread will ever be necessary.
The guy was built like a powerlifter. He actually beat Louis to the punch with the left hook which floored the Bomber. The guy grew up lugging blocks of ice up stairs in the decades long before modern refrigeration was available (which didn't happen until after WW II), and had his own ice wagon by age 15. That's the urban equivalent of hoisting bales of hay or chopping, splitting and sawing wood. Broad shoulders and huge calves (over 18 inches). He had the frame of a classic endomorph. Nobody else ever came off the floor to return the favor to Louis. Galento would've been a nightmare under London Prize Ring rules.
Galento's best fighting weight was around 210-220 and he was in shape around that weight, but like a lot of fighters he didn't watch his diet and his weight ballooned up. Here are a few pictures of Galento.
