Curtis Tyrone Harper vs. Francois Renea Russell. 6 rounds @ heavyweight

 

Curtis "The Hurt" Harper has come a long way since his protest walkout loss (officially DQ1) against Efe Ajagba six years ago. He went on a 1-5-0-1 skid after that, but was at least trying against the prospects and contenders he was matched with...the likes of Bakhodir Jalolov and Richard Torrez Jr.

This year he seems to have found his niche and dedicated himself to annihilating lesser foes on these Country Box shows at the Troubadour Theater. Three man since May have failed to escape the 1st round against him.

Russell's record makes Harper seem world-rating worthy. 3-42, with all three victories and 31 of those defeats by KO - the ultimate glass cannon. He's giving up 5 inches and considerable reach to Harper.

 

Round 1

Harper is jabbing his way in and then ripping hooks at the head, letting his own face linger in Russell's chest as an inviting target while he loads up on overhand rights. Russell isn't interested in trading, flurrying and backing away or tying up. Harper is wrestled into the ropes, ref calls a break. Russell is backed into a corner with a series of charging overhands and hooks. Time out called. Russell's shoes came untied. Action resumes and Harper is just bashing away, while Russell attempts desperately to clinch. Russell tries getting cute and meeting Harper jab for jab and is rocked by a big axing right even with his arm in the way stunting its momentum. Harper smothers him in the corner. Big straight right by Harper, and then a left hook while Russell is stunned puts him down and he's saved by the bell.

Round 2

Russell is confused as Harper comes out hunting as southpaw. Russell drifts into the ropes and then flings himself in to clinch. Harper diving in with rights on the body, knocking Russell bodily into the ropes. Russell bounces directly into a pummeling combo and is put down to a knee. He beats the count but there is over two minutes worth of clock for Harper to capitalize and he is building up a head of steam. Hammering blows from Harper and Russell to a knee again. Harper fakes a jab and slings a heavy right hand. Harper switching stances. Harper jumps in with a jab, then whips underhanded power shots on the body. Russell down to a knee for a third and final time as the white towel flies in.

TKO2!!

 

Harper vs. McCall would actually be insanely fun right now...

Never heard either man's entrance theme before, but was able to quickly look them up by snippets of the lyrics.

You know something? I'm no spring chicken myself and she's practically old enough to have been my (teen) mom - but the Coalminer's Daughter could still get it.

 

Hardly a step up here for the undefeated Kazakh-Floridian on paper. His last four opponents weren't exactly a murderer's row but they at least had positive records. Rodgers is 9-14-3. He does, however, score the occasional upset (including 8-0 Greg Outlaw, 10-1 Thomas Velasquez, 14-3 Willie Shaw, 19-4-1 Samuel Teah, and 19-1-2 Julian Rodarte) - so he's packing some moderate truth serum.

 

Round 1

Shvab is starting southpaw. Jab duel. Rodgers using a lot of slippery ducking and crossover stepping, being a pest. Rodgers whips a left hook at the body and misses - very wide & loose, lucky he didn't take a counter down the pipe there as he was ridiculously open. Shvab is committed to boxing lefty, popping the right jab as he steps in on Rodgers. Swatting left hooks up top by Rodgers, caught on the forearm. Shvab not letting his hands go much outside the jab. Finally some body shots with twenty seconds left. Rodgers reaches with a right downstairs and is caught with a couple of uppercuts.
