Make no mistake about it, Mikey Garcia was a special fighter in his prime too with devastating power on top of that, he’s an underachiever even though he was a 4 weight world champion, he was very inactive and seemingly lacked motivation in his latest fights, that’s why he didn’t have longevity, at his best he’d probably beat the current crop of lightweight/super lightweights, people probably don’t rate him as highly now due to more recent losses, but at his best he was very good. Who wins this matchup?
The fight was number 1 on my wishlist after Mikey beat Easter and I'm still sad it didn't happen when it was suppose to. It would've been legacy fight for both. Mikey - which is at least somewhat understandable considering his history with the company - didn't want to work with Top Rank and instead moved up for a payday against Spence, in a fight which was predictably a physical mismatch. It would've been great technical fight. Lomachenko was already struggling with injuries, but was certainly closer to his physical prime and Mikey wasn't as big or physical as Teofimo or Haney later on. On the other hand Mikey's right hand would've been very dangerous and it would be a threat every time Loma would try to close the gap. I'd pick Loma, but I see it as a close call.
He most assuredly lost to Teo original question: I've said multiple times that Mikey was the only person at those lower weights that could go skillset for skillset with Loma. I would favor Loma but that would be an ultracompetitive fight and a win by either wouldn't shock me. Neither one of them would get dominated by the other. It would be a lower weightclass version of Toney/Mccallum, just pure chess.
I used to rank Garcia a spot higher than Loma on P4P lists, but it's tough to say how they'd match H2H - Loma would've brought a lot more speed than Garcia was used to seeing.
Loma absolutely schools Mikey. Mikey avoided technicians like the plague (LSC, Linares, and Pedraza for example) and also avoided big punchers. Mikey got by off of his power and the connections his brother afforded him without really developing all that much skills wise. All Mikey really had was a 1-2 he would throw at the same speed, over and over again and some good fundamentals but nothing really all that extraordinary or layered. Loma is far more skilled and far more proven fighter than Mikey and I wouldn't have been surprised if he had stopped Mikey had the fight been made.
Man I love both guys but if I was putting money on it, I would go with Lomo. He just had a little more of everything to his game than Mikey had with speed, angles and footwork being the big difference makers. Mikey was a bit of a rhythm guy and fought at a certain pace. I believe Lomo would make him fight at his pace and Mikey would simply get outpointed over 12 rounds. Mikey had just as much talent but he didn't have the work ethic or discipline that Lomo has.
Never really had a high opinion of Garcia TBH. Kept the handcuffs on way too much for my liking. Loma wide UD
That was the fight that should have happened but sadly didn't. Garcia was a great puncher with nice textbook skills but against a prime Loma he would look out of his depths. And I think Garcia knew this which was why he decided to sidestep Loma and cash out against Spence.
It's pretty well documented that Mikey just didn't like being a fighter. I was gonna say he doesn't like boxing, but I dont think that's accurate. He's always attending fights, even now in retirement, so he does love the sport, but he didn't like being a fighter and he didn't like training. As for this matchup: I think a mythical Mikey who actually trained and wanted it 100% would have beaten Loma. Lomachenko is, quite honestly, one of the most overrated fighters in boxing history. Having said that, Mikey probably wouldn't care enough. Loma would win just by virtue of being a more dedicated fighter.
