Could Stewart have turned Carnera into an ATG super heavyweight? Stewart seemed to specialize in training tall, rangy fighters to use their physical advantages in the ring.

Can’t say whether or not Steward’s training would make an all time great out of primo Carnera. I can only guess that it would have made him better though

I get the idea that they squeezed every drop of potential out of Carnera that was there to be realized.

Some fighters simply reach their level.

Pretty much - I also don’t think Stewart is magic considering there was regression under him by De La Hoya… not every trainer for every fighter. I think one thing I’d have Carnera do is fight as much as he could like John Ruiz or Fullmer, weaponise the clinch tire them out, get dirty and drag them around the ring.

It would actually be much more interesting to see what he could do with Jess Willard.

There is a fighter who really could have been improved a lot.

Steward could not give Primo ,either a punch, or a chin.

I’ve heard that Carnera was a pain to train and didn’t have much interest in significantly developing. I might be mistaking him with Baer

Steward would’ve never lasted as Carnera’s trainer. Steward and See would’ve never got along and Steward would’ve quickly got fired.

The biggest problem in Carnera’s development early on wasn’t a lack of capable trainers, but Leon See being a control freak. Early in Carnera’s career Billy Duffy, who was Carnera’s head trainer brought in Abe Attell and even Tommy Burns to help him develop Carnera, but both were quickly fired by See. Even Duffy got fed up and almost walked on Carnera and See until See agreed to stop interfering with Carnera’s training and the assistants he brought in.
