Interesting because Usyk's workrate dropped with his size increase moving to HW and he throws about the same amount of punches over the distance that Ali & Frazier would, 600-700. These jumbo heavies can only get up to about 500-600 on a really good day which was a key advantage for Usyk. Suddenly Usyk has to be careful about fighting these equal sized heavyweights where his workrate advantage suddenly disappears. If Joe Frazier can give Ali hell for leather he can Usyk...but Usyk isn't going to sit on the ropes or clinch he's going to keep moving, which is taxing on the constant Bob Weave Frazier. I'd pay to see it.
Tyson Fury would have thrown 800 punches against Frazier, turned him into gravy, and then eaten the gravy over a nice bowl of boar guts.
Based on the # of punches Ali threw in that the heat I'd say he was well prepared. I don't think he trained to move alot for that fight. A few extra pounds they both carried going into Manila most likely were intentional anticipating that heat. They weighed in 3 or 4 days before the bout.
Interesting that Ali said that. I mean he had to be in some excellent condition to fight and hang the way he did against Frazier in extreme heat. Otherwise, I always had the casual impression that Ali really thought he could take Joe out - thus his heavier weight and power punching display over about the first 4 rounds. Joe of course came on after that but then Ali took the fight back around or after the 10th? round. I’ll just say that I don’t think Ali expected that level of performance from Frazier but Ali was still able to call on his ungodly reserves to win the fight. I think Ray Leonard got “caught out” (if you will) in similar fashion in the rematch vs Hearns. I believe Ray thought Tommy was sufficiently damaged goods for Ray to secure, say, a mid fight KO - Tommy had other plans however and like Manila, a great fight unfolded between 2 old, past prime foes. ATG spirit never dies.
