Fury was never that good.

It could be argued you could put Ngannou into that hat too.

 

Dethroned Wlad who was undefeated for the best part of a decade in his own backyard. As the underdog.

Went to Wilder’s backyard and leathered him, -again as the underdog after 3 years out on the **** ballooning up to near on 30st

Gave Usyk a good run for his money twice who everyone is now claiming is the second coming of Jesus Christ, the pound 4 pound number 1 and in some people’s minds (from what I’m continually now seeing) in the GOAT conversation…..

So to call Fury not that good is laughable really.

People aren’t saying that though. They’re saying Wilder was an overrated, extremely technically limited and protected fighter though.

 

Maybe no one here is using this se exact words fair enough. This seems to be a prevalent way of thinking though these days, the thread proclaims “he was never that good”, if he’s not even that good then who is. The only heavyweight in the world whose beat him?

I get the criticisms of his career like

 

This is what people do online.
They pick a champion boxer they don’t like and call them a bum.

nobodies record or career is perfect and holes can be picked in any career, so they pick holes in some people’s careers and hype others up.

I think everyone thinks Fury is good, but we’ve also spent years hearing about how he’s an ATG, the best of his generation, and how he would probably beat everyone else, including Usyk. He was given the #1 spot without proving he’s number #1. It turns out he’s not the best of his generation and one of the guys he would probably beat (an ugly middleweight poof foreigner that didn’t deserve a title fight because he can’t speak English, according to him) is clearly better than him. Of course people are now going to question how much of the years of hype was legit, and fights with Chisora, Ngannou etc aren’t doing him any favours when considering legacy.

 

If Fury is considered to be not very good then nearly all boxers should hang up the gloves.

Personally don't think Fury has done anything in the ring to be considered an ATG but he has certainly cemented his place in the top 10 best British Heavyweights of all time which is a remarkable achievement.

The very poor Heavyweight era from 2014 until the arrival of Usyk has to be considered for context.

Usyk has sorted out every argument amongst Brits about who is the best heavyweight after defeating Bellew, Chisora, Joshua twice, Dubois and now Fury twice.

Usyk meets the criteria for an ATG with outstanding achievements in the ring both at Cruiserweight and Heavyweight.

Simply the best.

 

Fury's legacy will depend on the outcome of Joshua v Fury if that is the route he is going to take next. Failure to win could see his stock drop hard but if he schools him it will cement his place as the best heavyweight 2014-2024 and second best from 2024 - present.

I'm not sure you can retroactively call Fury the best HW from pre Usyk times if he beats Joshua. Neither Fury nor Joshua are prime, so all a fight does now is tell us who is the better fighter between the two at the point in time the fight takes place.

Ultimately, we don't really know who would have won a fight between them in their primes. It's made even more difficult by Joshua's relatively weak mental strength making his performances fluctuate drastically throughout his career and Fury's long time out of the ring meaning that pinning their primes down is quite difficult.

2019, just after Fury v Wilder 1 and before Joshua's loss to Ruiz would have been a good time for the fight, I suppose. Both were still undefeated, and whilst Fury drew to Wilder, he clearly won the fight and proved that he was back.

A fight now is not as bad as the timing of the Khan v Brook fight, but it is verging on having no big say on who is better prime for prime.

 

It will cement it in the mind of the fans and I think that's probably important enough for both to make the fight happen. Prime for prime Fury would outbox Joshua, same way he did Wlad.

 

I think prime for prime, AJ would have won due to the stylistic matchup but we will never know so it’s pointless
