Warning. The only thing I feel like I can add to this conversation is like some historical boxing trivia. You have been preambled dog, if you don't like historical anecdotes **** off to the next post.

If you go to Cyber Boxing Zone and look at Tracy's list of English bareknuckle champions, you can start at Ben Brian and end at Tom Spring for a period when then royals were boxing fans.

I forget which king is in power when Mendoza is champion in the mid 1790s, but, I do recall some story about Mendoza being invited to a hunt with the king of England.

Tom Cribb's era is both the apex of royal interaction and the beginning of the end. The first sporting belt in the history of ever was given to Cribb and commissioned by none other than whoever TF is king of England abouts 1810, Georgie I think but I'd need to check to know.

Tom was a really beloved champions whose time as champion during the bareknuckle era is crazy long. It's about 10-12 years or some such similar craziness. When he retired he handed his title over to Tom Spring. Back then the champion was also seen as the expert on boxing. We didn't rely on journalists' opinion yet and it was not unheard of for a champion to hand his title over, no fight needed.

But that certainly does not make you popular and from that point on no one really captured royal attention, or at least that my yank ass is aware of.

Dave 'Boy' Green v Henry Rhiney
    Mark Kaylor v Roy Gumbs

The more I think of it, Mark Kaylor was in so many fights that I really loved. Two more would be his fights with James Cook and Tom Collins. Both losing fights towards the tail end of his career, but he still managed to make both exciting.

    Hi Buddy.
Good pics, btw I was in attendance at all 3 fights, although they were all exciting in there own right, the standout for me was Green/Rhiney, this was a torrid tussel, Green was approaching his very best and the prevailing thought process was it would be an easy night for him, no such thing, Rhiney put up spirited resistance, he fought back hard after Greens vaunted body attack had subsided, in fact launching his own vicious body onslaught, from memory it was in the balance up until the final round, terrific fight by two brave and spirited warriors.
stay safe scartissue, chat soon .
    Mike.

Mike, I was with the majority that Green was going to steamroll him, but I too was amazed. Rhiney was an underrated fighter.

It's less about one particular fight, so I'm cheating in my own thread, but I really like Rocky Kelly.

He's a Scouser, so he had to win me over, but he was in some awesome fights. The one for the British title was Kostas Petrou, and it was awesome.

Outside of that one, there's his fights with Tony Brown, Chris Sanigar and Gary Jacobs but they don't count here.

Michael Ayers against Colin Dunn was a good one - not as good as Ayers v Wayne Rigby but that was for the IBO ‘world’ title.
