Most people have Moore in the top 2.

Charles beat a prime Moore 3 out of 3. Once by possible shutout and once by stoppage. Allied with other fine wins, he's the only answer for me.

 

My vote went to Ezzard Charles.The names in your poll shows what
a brilliant,and underrated, division the lightheavyweights have been
throughout history.

 

Beterbiev's resume is way to light to be on that list

 

What better h2h indicator can there be than beating arguably the 2nd best ever in your division?

 

Tommy Gibbons deserves consideration. 3 of his 4 losses were at heavyweight. That leaves 56 wins and 48 KOs.

I voted Charles, because historically he was amazing, but I was tempted with Spinks who I've seen much more of

Of course if this thread was posted in the main forum beterbiev or bivol would be leading the poll, as boxing has only existed the last 10 years over there

 

I agree Gibbons is underrated at LHW (and in general), though at #11 on my all time list, he's not a contender for GOAT at the eight.

In fights contested over 164lbs (to make allowance for slightly over the weight, non title contest between MWs) and under 180lbs (to make allowance for slightly over the weight, non title contest between LHWs), Gibbons went roughly 28-1-2. His exact record at that weight may be slightly different, as I made some assumptions on weight for contests I couldn't find a verifiable source for the weights of both fighters.

His sole defeat in this weight range was to Harry Greb, who is both my #2 all time at LHW based on fights contested in this weight range only and my #2 all time p4p based on fights at all weights. He also beat Greb is this weight range. They went 2-2 in total, 1-1 at MW & 1-1 at LHW.

Aside from Greb, Gibbons beat Kid Norfolk, Battling Levinsky, Georges Carpentier, Clay Turner x 2 and Harry Foley at the weight range I assigned as LHW when collating data to support my all time rankings. That's a fine win resume and when weighed against a sole defeat against Greb, indicates a formidable LHW, though not quite the depth to challenge for the GOAT at LHW, imo.

Spinks and Charles have to be at the top of the list. I also put Roy in there because of his incredible speed and our new king, Beterbiev because of his power. Gun to my head, I'm taking Ezzard Charles but it's close.

 

Charles for me followed closely by Spinks.

I am tempted to put Foster at #3 purely due to his power and height. Very hard to outbox him given his 6'3 frame, powerful jab and massive left hook.

Moore i would probably put at #4.

RJJ, despite his ko losses, has to be mentioned as well. While i think RJJ would struggle vs tall lanky guys like Spinks and Foster, it wouldn't shock me to see RJJ give Moore and Charles all they could handle. If you were a similar height to RJJ, I think he is a nightmare. And i don't think his chin is quite that easy to crack in his prime since it was hard to nail him cleanly.

Beterbiev is top 10 for me. As much as i dislike the rabit punching, you can't deny that 5 years ago, he was an absolute force. Devestating power in both hands, excellent stamina, relentless pressure, immense physical strength, a good chin etc. I like Bivol but i don't think he goes the distance vs the Beterbiev that mauled Gvozdyk.

I love Langford and have him as my #2 all time at 175 lbs BUT strictly in a h2h sense, i can't judge him due to only a few fights available on video. So i will leave Sam out of this discussion even though i rank him #2 all time based on accomplishments.

Mr Charles for me. Due to his resume, Greb should get a mention. But none of us have ever seen him fight.
