Sugar Ray Leonard vs Ayub Kalule

    1 Leonard
    2 Leonard
    3 Kalule
    4 Leonard
    5 Leonard
    6 Leonard
    7 Kalule
    8 Leonard
    9 Leonard wins by TKO

    78-74 Leonard

This fight wasn't as competitive as i remember don't get me wrong Kalule was game but i thought Leonard was mostly in control being the aggressor and landing all the eye catching punches that visibly hurt Kalule.

I thought the ending was a tad strange Kalule got floored from a right hand but got up well within time and seemed coherent and the round was just about to end aswell. It did seem like a bit of premature stoppage to me but Leonard was really digging in those body shots in the 9th round and was hurting Kalule so it was just a matter of time anyway.

Evander Holyfield vs Riddick Bowe 2

    1 Bowe
    2 Bowe
    3 Bowe
    4 Holyfield
    5 Holyfield
    6 Holyfield
    7 Even
    8 Holyfield
    9 Bowe
    10 Holyfield
    11 Holyfield
    12 Bowe

    115-114 Holyfield

I thought this was quite an easy fight to score in all honesty Bowe clearly won the first 3 rounds using the jab effectively which had Holyfield puzzled.

Holyfield turned it around in the 4th round by landing combinations and cutting Bowe's eye after that wild exchange at the end of the round. Rounds 5 and 6 clearly belonged to Holyfield he hurt Bowe badly at the end of the 5th round, and 6th round followed the same pattern as the previou rounds with Holyfield out landing Bowe and landing eye catching combinations.

Now the infamous 7th round with the fan man Bowe won the 1st half of the round but then Holyfield clearly won the 2nd half of the round. This round is probably the most debatable round in the fight IMO and i think it's only fair to score it even.

For me the most important part of this fight was rounds 10 and 11 especially the 10th round that was quite an even round with not too many stand out moments from either fighter. But then in the last 30 seconds Holyfield had a big rally and stole that round and it was possibly the most important round for him.

Holyfield also clearly won the 11th round and then Bowe clearly outworked Holyfield and won the 12th round.

Overall a great fight you don't need me to tell you this but all in all i don't think there is many debatable rounds apart from maybe the 4th round and 7th round with the fan man. But Holyfield was a deserved winner IMO i thought he had bigger stand out moments with his eye catching punches, and his rally in rounds 10 and 11 were just enough for me for Holyfield to edge it.

    Mickey Ward v Emanuel Augustus

    Round 1: 10-9 Ward
    Round 2: 10-9 Ward
    Round 3: 10-10 Even
    Round 4: 10-9 Augustus
    Round 5: 10-9 Augustus
    Round 6: 10-10 Even
    Round 7: 10-9 Augustus
    Round 8: 10-9 Augustus
    Round 9: 10-8 Ward (scores a knockdown)
    Round 10: 10-9 Augustus

Total: 96-95 Augustus (actual scores: 96-94, 96-91 and 98-90 all for Ward)

Oh, man, this fight made my day. I don't know what took me so long to get to this fight. I can only describe it as the closest thing to Ramos v Ramos I've seen. Augustus/Burton was throwing those jolting counters off the ropes and with Ward's attack it worked out to a beautiful blend of mayhem. I would have been great with a draw. I can even see the 96-94 for Ward. But those other two were simply Ward fanboys who should've never had a pencil in their hand again. Fantastic fight.

Here is how I had it, as well as a little explanation on the stoppage.

Sugar Ray Leonard v Ayub Kalule

    Round 1: 10-9 Leonard
    Round 2: 10-9 Leonard
    Round 3: 10-10 Even
    Round 4: 10-9 Leonard
    Round 5: 10-9 Kalule
    Round 6: 10-9 Leonard
    Round 7: 10-9 Kalule
    Round 8: 10-9 Leonard
    Round 9: Leonard stops Kalule

Total through 8 completed rounds: 78-75 Leonard (actual scores: 78-75, 78-76 and 78-76 all for Leonard)

Needed to see this one again. I was real big on Kalule back in the day and was really annoyed at how the fight ended. Can't take anything away from Leonard for the knockdown but I always felt Leonard was getting the benefit of the doubt throughout his career and this one was icing on the cake for me on this subject. To clarify my paranoia on the subject, Kalule was up before the count of 10 and time had run out on the round and the bell should have rung, but of course, it didn't. The time was originally announced as a stoppage at 2:59, which was bogus. Back then I was ranting to anyone listening that the timekeeper refused to ring that bell hoping for a Leonard KO. Finally, they did admit the time of the stoppage was like 3:06 or something like that, which meant the bell should have rung. If so, Kalule would have gone to his corner and would have got at least another round. Don't know if things would have been different, probably not, but Leonard admitted he threw absolutely everything into that last combo to drop him, so who knows who would have been more ready to resume warfare after that. I loved Kalule's reflexes throughout the fight, but his lack of power was his downfall. still, great combos and counters from both fighters throughout.

I don't know if you knew this but Kinchen tested positive for a painkiller called "Lidocaine" now I'm not actually sure what it did for him but it's interesting nevertheless.

    Rudy Zavala vs Jesus Salud

    Round 1 Rudy Zavala
    Round 2 Jesus Salud
    Round 3 Jesus Salud
    Round 4 Jesus Salud
    Round 5 Rudy Zavala
    Round 6 Jesus Salud
    Round 7 Jesus Salud
    Round 8 Jesus Salud TKO

Excellent and grueling fight although a bit one sided. Both guys wasted no time throwing leather. Salud opens up a cut on Zavala, which would end up becoming a huge factor throughout. Although Zavala has his moment when he starts going after Salud in the 5th round Salud quickly turns things around in his favor afterwards and takes over for the rest of the fight en route to a stoppage.

Hector Camacho vs Ray "Boom Boom" Mancini

    Rd 1: Camacho 10-9
    Rd 2: Camacho 10-9
    Rd 3: Camacho 10-9
    Rd 4: Mancini 9-10
    Rd 5: Mancini 9-10
    Rd 6: Camacho 10-9
    Rd 7: Camacho 10-9
    Rd 8: Mancini 9-10
    Rd 9: Mancini 9-10
    Rd 10: Mancini 9-10
    Rd 11: Mancini 9-10
    Rd 12: Camacho 10-9

    Final Scorecard: 114-114 DRAW

Such a difficult fight to score. Camacho is clearly a more flashier fighter. Insanely quick and elusive and his punches were generally more eye-catching than Mancini's. On the other hand, his punching output was unacceptably scarce in some rounds. He was also guilty of excessive holding, especially in the second half of the fight. Mancini was the aggressor for the entirety of the fight, as he relentlessly pursued Camacho across the ring, although ring dimensions made it somewhat difficult for him to successfully cut off his opponent. He threw a lot, and missed a lot. Most of his punches targeting Camacho's head didn't connect, but he did score with a beautiful left hook to Camacho's temple in the 10th round, which was arguably the best punch of the fight. He also threw some powerful shots to the body. Not a fight, I enjoy that much to be honest.

George Foreman vs Joe Frazier 2

    1 Foreman
    2 Foreman
    3 Foreman
    4 Foreman
    5 Foreman wins by TKO

I've never actually sat down and watched their 2nd properly I have to say it was weird to see Frazier fighting on the backfoot trying to be a boxer/mover counter puncher.

Despite Foreman winning every round I do think Frazier was somewhat competitive in this fight especially in the 2nd and 4th rounds Frazier was able to counter effectively with left hooks and Foreman couldn't quite pin him down in those rounds.

The issue was though is that Frazier's left hooks had no effect on Foreman so he couldn't stop him coming forward. And whilst Frazier did try a new style I don't think it suited him and he looked a bit awkward at times for me.

Brave effort from Frazier though but Foreman is just a horrible style match up for him.

Pipino Cuevas v Jun Suk Hwang

    Round 1: 10-9 Cuevas
    Round 2: 10-9 Hwang
    Round 3: 10-9 Cuevas
    Round 4: 10-9 Hwang
    Round 5: 10-9 Hwang
    Round 6: 10-9 Hwang
    Round 7: 10-9 Hwang
    Round 8: 10-9 Hwang
    Round 9: 10-9 Cuevas
    Round 10: 10-9 Hwang

Total: 97-93 Hwang (actual scores: 96-94, 96-95 and 96-96 for a majority decision for Hwang)

Wow! This was just like an old-fashioned club fight that the Olympic was known for. This was a jaded Cuevas who would have made short work of Hwang - IMO - pre-Hearns. But this version settled in to a rock-em-sock-em with Hwang. And if any of these two threw a jab in the 10 rounds, it was by accident. Every punch they threw was designed to take the other's head off. Hwang threw nothing but haymakers throughout the fight, and it was enough, although Cuevas really looked like he was going to end matters in the 9th, and may have, if not for some strategic spit-the-mouthpiece-out-twice by Hwang. I thought he would have at least got himself a point deducted, but no. And that effort got him through the round where he resumed haymaker warfare on Cuevas. No finesse but a wild fight.

Juan Manuel Marquez v Chris John

    Rd 1: John 9-10
    Rd 2: Marquez 10-9
    Rd 3: John 9-10
    Rd 4: John 9-10
    Rd 5: Marquez 10-9
    Rd 6: John 9-10
    Rd 7: Marquez 10-9
    Rd 8: Marquez 10-9
    Rd 9 : Marquez 10-9
Rd 10: Draw 9-9 (point deducted from Marquez)
Rd 11: John 8-10 (point deducted from Marquez)
    Rd 12: Marquez 10-9

    Final scorecard: 113-113 DRAW

I am surprised by the relatively wide judicial scorecards (116-112, 117-111 and 116-110 for John). Perhaps, the fact they fought on John's home turf influenced their scoring. First half was close and competitive, but in the second half I felt Marquez was clearly getting the better of John. He was landing more and landing cleaner, while John didn't really offer much. He mostly circled around the ring and threw light jabs. Overall, Marquez definitely left the better impression on me with his power punches and ring generalship. If it weren't for the two unfortunate point deductions for low blows, I would have him as winner.
