I thought I posted a thread like this quite a few years back but now I’m thinking I might have dreamt it since I can’t find it.

Anyway, at the time of Tyson fight, how was Berbick viewed? Was he considered past prime, in his prime, or just simply not good enough to hang with the young challenger? Did anybody at the time give him a shot to retain his title?

He opened as a 6-1 dog and it was down to 3-1 at the time of the fight. Fringe contender

he was regarded as a perennial spoiler that was difficult to look good against.

he wasn't that big of an underdog vs. Tyson iirc, so there were at least some people who thought his toughness & experience could have an impact.

The outcome was preordained. I'm not saying it was a work but the PTB was intent on making Mike the youngest hw champion.

Fringe contender? He was WBC heavyweight champion of the world. He would be in the top 10 of any era.

A necessary sacrificial offering (even if Berbick didn't know it).

I suppose that I'll have to overrate Galento from now on, in your stead.

He said Galento could beat Chuvalo. That was a bad take

Oh it was terrible. Same goes for him saying that Galento and Tua were no different.

I can't recall anyone of the crew I was with who thought Berbick would end the fight on his feet
Consensus was an early KO, Never thought much of Berbick, probably over achieved to get where he was.
If John Tate hadn't been on the coke train he'd have beat him.
