Hate to say this, but perhaps Earnie Shavers, casuals liked to praise him a ton as a great one, while his best wins only include fighters like Young and Ellis.
Ray Mercer’s power gets overrated because of the Morrison stoppage, that was a brutal combination where Morrison got trapped in the corner, which allowed Mercer to land loaded up combinations as much as he wanted because Morrison couldn’t go anywhere.
I had high hopes for Smith after seeing him KO Spoon. The Tyson fight -one of the worst title fight ever!
You beat me to it. It's not that Shavers didn't hit hard AF, just that he's been exaggerated to the point no man can actually live up to the myth.
Ken Norton and Joe Bugner aswell the latter who he stopped very early is a good win considering how durable Bugner is and the fighters he went the distance with. 6'5 Roy Williams who weighed 230+ pounds and was extremely durable that's an underrated win aswell. He came within a whisker of stopping Holmes with one punch had he been able to connect with 1 or 2 more solid blows instead of getting overly wild he more than likely would've finished the job. I don't think there's any question about Shavers 1 punch power in all honesty especially considering how many fighters rate him as the best puncher they've ever fought.
Casuals, like Larry Holmes? Ali? Randall Cobb? Shavers issue was he wasn't a great finisher. But on a power basis only, some of the toughest men in boxing history gave him his props. Personally I believe what they say, they actually felt his power and could compare it to the many opponents they faced.
Hi Buddy. Good pics, not immediately obvious, would you concede that maybe Hagler could fit into this category, despite stopping 52 out of 62 opponents ? stay safe sal, chat soon buddy.
Andrew Golota gets overrated in terms of power IMO. While he had some power, you wouldn't see Golota doing to any decent Heavyweight what Lewis/Brewster did to him. It was just crazy how many flush shots he landed on a beyond shot Bowe in the rematch, and Bowe was still hanging around in the 9th to get the DQ win. I suspect that version of Bowe probably doesn't see the 2nd round against a legit puncher like Lewis. Another guy who, IIRC, was being hyped as some huge puncher, was Joel "The Love Child" Julio (who's still fighting, BTW). In the few fights I watched of his, he didn't seem the type of puncher they were making him out to be. He did score a decent KO vs. Bundrage though.
