The ITA reports that boxer Alexander Povetkin has been sanctioned with a 4-year period of ineligibility

The International Testing Agency (ITA), on behalf of the International Boxing Association (IBA), reports that Alexander Povetkin, a boxer from Russia, has been sanctioned with a four-year period of ineligibility for an anti-doping rule violation (ADRV) under Article 2.2 of the IBA anti-doping rules (IBA ADR) for the use of a prohibited substance based on data retrieved by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) from the Moscow laboratory.

As previously announced, the ADRV is based on investigations conducted by WADA’s Intelligence and Investigations Department (WADA I&I) and by Professor Richard McLaren into allegations of systemic doping practices in Russian sport as well as Moscow Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) data retrieved by WADA I&I over time. The evidence was provided by WADA I&I to the ITA for further assessment. In particular, these investigations uncovered LIMS data indicative of the presence of the banned substance ostarine in a sample provided by the athlete in 2014. Ostarine is a selective androgen receptor modulator (SARM) commonly used by athletes due to its muscle-building and performance-enhancing effects.

After being notified of the case and informed of his procedural rights, the athlete decided not to challenge the ADRV. The ITA issued a decision sanctioning him for 4-year period of ineligibility, commencing on 21 October 2024 and remaining in full force and effect until 20 October 2028 pursuant to the IBA ADR.

In addition, the athlete’s results from 28 September 2014 until the start of the athlete’s provisional suspension on 9 September 2024 have been disqualified, including the results obtained during a boxing match held on the night of 27/28 September 2014 in accordance with Articles 9 and 10.8 of the IBA ADR.

Since they can overturn his whole record between Sep 2014 and Sep 2024 this would be huge for future cases like this.

I don’t get it. Was he trying to make a comeback or something?

You're telling me a 40 year old Russian boxer was on the juice? I am shocked. No, horrified.

This discounts all the great victories he had from 2014-2024.

No surprise as he went from lack luster performances to sudden displays of Hulk smashing power

The ban is pointless as he's pretty much retired

    Cool

Now do the same for Wlad, Canelo and Joshua too....

....you know, just to be consistent

Key Fights Affected by the Ban

During this period, Povetkin fought 12 times, securing wins over Carlos Takam, Hughie Fury, David Price, and Dillian Whyte, while suffering defeats to Anthony Joshua and Dillian Whyte. However, with the annulment of these results, Povetkin’s professional record will now reflect these fights as void.

Err, shouldn't the consistent thing be to do it for someone who has actually failed a test? You know, like Fury.

Seems overly harsh and pointless. He already was disciplined for the ostarine positive test years ago and now he’s long retired. And let’s face it, if they really retested the drug samples for all top HW boxers and disqualified the results on positives, most of these guys would have 0-0 records.

Maybe he should’ve blamed it on tainted boar meat or depression. That seemed like an effective strategy in the past.
