That’s fair, I’m not married to my limited opinion. I have not seen a whole lot of Morrel and was just basing my opinion on the past highlights and how he looked Saturday. He could very well turn out to plateau at a level below elite. I just see the potential there.
I don’t think Benavidez stock dropped. He is invited to Saudi and that means $$$. Morrell is the kind of fighter that makes other fighters look bad. So I expected Benavidez to have some trouble with him. But Benavidez also made Morrell look more ordinary. From what I have seen from Morrell he usually looks really slick but against Benavidez at that level he could not bring the slickness. He did not have the overcapacity against Benavidez to look super slick. So in a way they made each other look bad while putting on a great fight. And that made them both look really good.
You can literally look at any world class fighter and find a fight where they struggled with an opponent or an opponents style. He still knocked Yarde out in the 8th round and has knocked out everyone that he has faced as a pro except for Bivol. Ronald Gavil gave Benavidez all kinds of problems and dropped him hard in their first fight. Should I use your same rational? No, because **** happens in boxing and Benavidez ultimately ended up proving he was better than Garvil just like Beterbiev overcame Yarde. I like Benavidez but he is an aggressive fighter that has a tendency to throw long combinations and is very physical with opponents. That's not going to work with Beterbiev. Beterbiev is NOT some crude slugger like you say. Look at his deep amateur pedigree and what he accomplished before even going pro.
No, PPV hurt boxing when it was on free TV fighters like Tyson and Ali got far more exposure to main stream fans.
You sound a bit emotional. Is D. Benavidez your family or something.....lol. Benavidez IS FLAT FOOTED. Pointing out that he landed 48% of his power punches does nothing to prove that wrong. Morrell early in the fight was moving constantly and attacking in angles that gave him some success in moments. Hell, he landed 32% of his power punches, which means he wasn't exactly shadow boxing out there. There were an abundance of moments where Morrell would lean on the ropes and/or stand in front of Benavidez and exchange with him as he felt he could back him up. You asked if I noticed how fast he would move backwards.......lol. His footwork shouldn't be taking him straight back. Great footwork would have you circling the aggressor and countering his energy with precise shots. I'm not saying Benavidez has no or terrible footwork, I'm just pointing out what MANY PEOPLE can see from watching his fights.....He's flat foot. Morrell even got a knock down late in the fight. It was from his devastating power....it was from timing on a man who was looking to put him to sleep with aggressive punches without a jab to set up the power punch. Why does that offend you? Why does me addressing his footwork get your panties in a bunch like you didn't see how awkward he looked trying to do his version of the "Ali Shuffle".......lol
Canelo is a flat foot fighter as well. I wouldn't say slow movement because he does have a quick twitch and great timing with IQ. He's also very sturdy in that ring, so trying to knock him out with sure power won't do anything but get you gassed real quick. You have to outbox and break him down over the course of the fight.
Tyson fought on ppv though. Boxing was huge during the 90’s even with the ppv’s. Also, now we have more media than tv covering the sport, like YouTube, facebook etc so it’s not like people can’t see fights or hear about them. the sport is doing as it normally does, it has a handful of stars, even then only odd ones transcend the sport.
No, British boxing was huge in the 80`s and 90`s, boxers like Bruno, Benn and Eubank were household names in the UK. The boxing fight between Chris Eubank and Nigel Benn drew 16.5m viewers. This represents ITV's third highest audience for a sports event.
That is your own comprehension doing that. Nothing I stated makes him seem super human. I simply gave characteristics about his abilities that he has showcased throughout his career. No where did I suggest he was flawless or didn't have holes to expose. Hell we have seen him exposed on different occassions during his career. The question is,..............can Benavidez do to Canelo what Lara, Mayweather, GGG, Bivol, even for a few rounds......what Khan was able to do. He's not going to be able to do that being planted and looking for power shots. Standing in front of Canelo, you are playing into his hand as he doesn't look forward to 'chasing' anyone in the ring. He wants you in the phone booth. He wants you to attempt to exchange with him. He's not looking to dance. For this reason is why I feel the Crawford match up is intriguing at the very least. No one is expecting Crawford to come in and physically push Canelo around. No one is expecting Crawford to come in and hurt Canelo with his power like he did Spence. We are looking for the game of "IQ" in the ring that will be showcased by Crawford and Canelo. Who can neutralize the strengths of their opponent while also finding success with their own strengths. It's the hard obvious, but it is often looked over by many who care more about their favorite guy than the reality of what that guy can do. Benavidez, didn't look the sharpest this past weekend. Some of that credit goes to Morrell and his attention to detail. But it's not hard to see that flaws were showcased and that they need to be addressed if Benavidez wants to have a fair shot at beating a Canelo, Bivol, or Beterbiev. Morrell is not the same caliber of any of those guys.
That’s only British boxing. Please remember that Britain is small in the boxing world. Saudis are now helping British boxing. I was going to ask if your a Brit as I agree with parts of what you say from a “Brit centric” perspective. I am talking world boxing though, so cannot agree wholly. Also, it’s the move to sky that damaged the views on terrestrial tv, before ppv. But sky reduced terrestrial tv viewing on all fronts you are proving my point though, boxing is a sport with a handful of superstars. You mentioned only a handful who had become household names to casuals. People tune in to watch those names. Casuals don’t care who the opponent is. the true big test was when they “left” England to see if they could handle it with the big boys in America. Also another point proven is you say British boxing was thriving on terrestrial tv, the Saudis have not put it on terrestrial tv.
What Benaividez demonstrated again on Saturday is that he is a very well schooled fighter. He made not have had as many amateur fights as Bivol, Beterbiev and Morrell but he clearly learned his trade in the gym as a young man sparring professionals. That experience is priceless. People talk about his relentless attack and volume combined with his size missing out on his excellent fundamentals and defence. He also has great instincts. This guy is a serious cat. You are entitled to your views on a matchup between him and Bivol or Beterbiev but I will tell you now he is a problem in the way their previous opponents have not been. Take that to the bank Sir and we can discuss further when these matches are made.
