I kind see it the same way.

A Jack Johnson fight doesn't pass the eye test today in my view. However a Evander Holyfield fight or a Larry Holmes fight does even though it's still significantly back in time so I think in a way there is sort of a cutoff. However if Johnson had all the advantages that existed later on with better recovery methods/training who is to say he wouldn't adapt and dominate even today. I don't follow MMA other than casually but from my understanding techniques and styles have changed and advanced pretty quickly in that sport.

Really old fights will very rarely pass the eye test.

The footage is of poor quality, and they’re fighting in what most people perceive to be an unusual way, due to the smaller gloves that they wore, which affected them both offensively and defensively.

However, there’s been technical fighters in almost every era, including Dempsey’s.

There’s also been an array of different fighters in each era, all with different styles, which are still around today.

The sport has evolved from its roots, but it doesn’t continue to evolve in a continuous cycle.

There’s been no evolution in the sport for a very long time.

It just simply ebbs and flows throughout each division.

And fighters from decades ago could beat many of today’s guys, as well as vice versa, simply because all fights are determined by how the two fighters match up on the night stylistically.

And that’s logic. Pure common sense. And nothing to do with nostalgia.

Canelo should be 147lbs-154lbs if you know what I’m saying.

People are delusional and insane if they think that Canelita can take the punches Willard took. Dempsey would destroy the heavyweights today at 190 bone dry.

Yes I'm sure YOU couldn't see why Canelo would be slaughtered.

You're right, people are delusional, if they think Canelo would be able to stand up under the punches Willard took... though not nearly as delusional as you are, if you really believe a 190 lbs Dempsey would clean out today's HW division!

So you are saying that Willard wasn’t as durable as todays heavyweights?

If Firpo was a manufactured hype job wouldn't one expect Dempsey to dominate from start to finish?

The real question is this. Will the fight be fought under the rules in place in 1920 or 2020? The closer the rules are to 1920 the worse chance Alvarez has. If Dempsey can knock him down and hit him as soon as he stands up then Canelo is in a lot of trouble.

Canelo taking easy fights when past prime and in the twilight of his career seems of little relevance. Lots of guys do that. Benavidez is hardly a standout contender in any case

Yes, Canelo beats him. Dempsey is about the same size and weight as Joe Smith Jr. so there isn't going to be a huge difference in size considering how much Canelo rehydrates to. That brings the fight mostly down to skills and stylistic factors, and in this regard Canelo absolutely wipes him. I know Dempsey is an ATG and favoured to beat legit HWs like Wlad by some in the Classic section, but that sort of non-reasoning shouldn't factor into the debate. People need to stop thinking of Dempsey as an actual HW or even a particularly skilled one.

Dempsey had a better hook than Joe Smith Jr.
