Glaser is notorious for under-reporting numbers. He always reports half of what anyone else says. Also, during a lawsuit against Golden Boy, the Canelo vs Khan numbers got leaked, and Glasier was proven wrong there. He reported half of what was in Golden Boy´s own internal documents.
You’re correct about everything except the final sentence: Turki is backed by Saudi’s Public Investment Fund which is worth over $900bn. So $1bn really is nothing to them: if anything they view it as a very reasonable price to pay to clean up the international image of Saudi. The sportswashing will continue for as long as the Saudis want. Not that I’m complaining.
The Saudi cards are absolutely about making money! It´s just a long term investment, for which the end goal is to get butts in seats. They are chasing the same live gates New York, and Las Vegas do for boxing. The goal is tourism.
Hilarious. Rick's anonymous LA-based attorney. Because, if you say LA, to old weirdos like Rick, that sounds "classy." Again, nobody in boxing claims to make triple the earnings they actually did. The Internal Revenue Service reads the same stuff everyone else does. If I beat my chest and tell everyone publicly I generated $12 million ... and I tell the government at tax time I made $5 million ... the IRS is going to come looking for that remaining $7 million. Over and over and over again. They'd rather you think they made less than they did so the tax folks don't look too close. Fans laughing that the "real numbers" are "LESS" ... just come off looking as "made up" as Rick's "anonymous LA-based attorney."
I bought the PPV but I agree it was way too much. I mean if you get 10 guys splitting the cost it's fine but who does boxing parties anymore? These cards should cost $20 and not a penny more.
Saudi's Public Investment Fund invests in a lot of businesses. T-Mobile. Uber. Etc. Most of those ventures aren't losing a half a billion dollars a year, like their boxing investment has.
What? I literally made a thread recently criticizing PBC, and have called for their demise several times. The clear end goal for Saudi´s investing so much into sports is tourism. They say so themselves! So yes, that means butts in seats and ticket sales. This is a long term investment for them as they are building their tourism sector from 0.
That´s two different things. The fund invests into assets that generate revenue, as in dividends from T-Mobile - for an example. They then use those dividends to invest into boxing. They are not draining the actual fund to finance boxing events, just the dividends.
All PBC fights are PPV. PBC has no other choice. Those fools are broke. PBC can't find a network to pay the boxers the guaranteed they signed the fighters too. That is also why all fighters who can't sell have been on the shelf. To show how bad and stupid this organization is they paid Canelo 70 millions in 20204.
That's my issue. $80 for undisputed between two legitimate ATG's? That's fine. Two younger undefeated guys for meaningless belts? I'm ok with paying, I'm always happy to spend to support things I love, but $80 is kind of steep for where they are in their careers. I paid, but I can see the price having cost some buys. Saudi is distorting everything now by running their events at a loss. That isn't really helping.
then they are in a position to set up the best possible deal for the fighters. they could sign the fighters to a contract that has them split all profit, after all operating costs are paid. fighters can negotiate between their teams the percentages. that model would work as long as they continue to see a positive gain in the tourism. that insures fighters make exactly what theyre worth. and turki draws more and more attention to saudi as a tourist destination.
Genuinely, I don´t think this would work at all for the Saudis. These events don´t seem to be big money generators, thus they would have to pay less than they are doing currently. Which means they would not able to entice these guys to fight in Riyadh.
