So Archie would be 105 if he were still alive...
It really doesn't feel like that long ago that he died.

He died December 9, 1998. Four days before his 85th birthday.

Almost 40 years exactly to the day of this fight which was December 10, 1958.

I'm sorry but this fight is really overrated. Apart from a dramatic first and some nice flurries from Moore, this fight is contested at a pretty lackadaisical pace and consisted predominantly of Moore countering and outclassing the limited and stiff Durelle, who barely let his hands go with any real intention.

It’s what ABC’s Wide World of Sports used to call ‘the human drama of athletic competition.’

To see Archie come back from that is more dramatic than a decade of Hollywood blockbusters.

What fights do you enjoy watching?

Moore was 41 (and even if you believe the myth that he was born in 1913, he would be 44 here), but still an incredible win

Top 3 comeback win for me, along with Benn vs McClellan and Sullivan vs Kilrain

idk what it is but the comeback just doesn't feel as dramatic as it should. Neither men really throw combinations much during the fight, so Durelle never unloads on the clearly dazed Archie Moore. The actual KDs aren't that dramatic either. Durelle doesn't even land particularly flush. I was just expecting so much more out of this fight from all the hype it got. Moore wasn't even down on the scorecards at the time of the stoppage, he'd clearly been outclassing Durelle for essentially any part of the fight when he wasn't on the canvas. It's not like he was getting beaten up badly either. Moore survived the 1st round where he was cold and hurt but never truly out on his feet. He wasn't rocking around wildly or bent over, or even huffing and puffing from the strain of taking the shots. Durelle never capitalised on his success or had any kind of urgency to his work.
Something about this fight just doesn't click for me. Durelle is so ineffective for such long stretches and Moore almost instantly regains control of the fight in the 2nd. Maidana fighting on after the hellacious body shot he took from Khan, Espinoza roaring back from being out on his feet against Robesiy Ramirez, and Gatti surviving the 9th against Ward all seemed more dramatic and satisfying comebacks to me quite honestly.

Moore vs Johnson would've been perfect for you too then, it's not fully lopsided to Johnson but Moore had to make sure he got home with the belt back.

Is Durelle really limited and stiff?
