As I recall, I had it a draw. People I was with had it for Mercer. That's a fight I should revisit. Keep in mind folks that a 40 year old comebacking Larry Holmes beat Mercer just with his jab and made it easy. That's something Lewis couldn't do.
My file says the last time I had a look at this fight was in 2011: Mercer: 2, 4, 5, 9 Lewis: 1, 3, 6, 7, 8, 10 96-94 to Lewis
Looking back at that period for Mercer, I had Holyfield winning 95-94, with the knockdown making the difference. I also thought Witherspoon's early success edged Mercer 96-94, for what that's worth.
I scored it 95-95. Great fight that could have gone either way. Better fight than Lewis vs Vitali in my opinion
This. It was inactive and overweight version of Mercer, but motivated one. Still, active, unbeaten, 5 years younger and 10 lbs lighter Mercer that fought Holmes was better in my opinion. It just shows how skilled and smart Larry Holmes was it even at 42 he beat better version of Mercer much easier than Lewis did
This fight was close, very close with many of the rounds being up one way or the other. I don't think people were expecting to see Lewis have such a tough fight but respect to Mercer who fought arguably the best contest of his career & gave everyone he fought a tough fight. I had Lewis hanging on by one point but offer no argument for those thinking Mercer won, it was too close to call & could have gone either way.
I scored it 95-95 I get the impression that the majority have Lennox winning a close one, while a decent amount of people like myself have it even. A small percentage have Mercer ahead.
