I saw that, it was a bit surprising, it doesn't seem intuitive considering Parker has been in with the biggest punchers in the division.
When asked who hit them the hardest, fighters will often not mention the guys who knocked them out / down. In this particular case, it may actually be true, though. Parker has faced AJ, Zhang and Wilder who all hit harder than Ruiz, but Parker employed a more defensive style against these three than he did Ruiz, so he didn't take as many flush shots as he did against Ruiz. The aforementioned big three hitters were mainly throwing single shots or 1-2s making it easier for Parker to read and take the sting out of shots that connected. Against Ruiz, who throws combos, has quick hands, and can set traps, Parker will have been caught with shots that he didn't see coming. So whilst the shots Ruiz threw probably had less power than the other three, Parker would have felt Ruiz's shots more.
Chisora does have a pretty good overhand right hook/haymaker that seems to hurt everyone he lands it flush on.
I heard he had said this sometime last week. At first, I was like, fair enough. But then I remembered the look of shock on Parker's face when Zhang put him down. He became very careful after the first KD in the Zhang fight, I've not seen him do that before. So...yeah, I suspect he's tawkin' rubbish
I'm firmly in the camp of different types of power. Zhang probably has the heaviest hands and does the most physical damage, but Ruiz's combination of speed, angles, and accuracy (shots you don't see) may have affected Parker the most. There aren't any pain receptors in the brain, so all you can do to ascertain punching power is by really seeing how it affects your vision and memory as you get hit.
Joseph Parker and Andy Ruiz both have very unique styles, but hearing Parker say Ruiz hits the hardest is interesting! Ruiz might not have the same physique as other heavyweights, but his handspeed and surprising power have always been underrated. It’s a tough call, though, considering other heavy hitters like Wilder and Joshua. What do you think? Does Ruiz’s short stature add to the surprise of his punches?
Ruiz couldn't stop ancient versions of Arreola, Liakhovich, and couldn't put away Ortiz who's punch resistance was shot at that time. Needless to say I think Parker is over estimating Ruiz's punch power because Ruiz didn't drop him and its one of his notable wins. And fighters often like to give credit to fighters they beat rather than the fighters who beat them. Whyte hits harder than Ruiz he dropped Parker like a sack of potatoes with one left hook. And obviously Zhang is a much harder puncher than Ruiz aswell.
283 pound, untrained Ruiz is about to become a legend around here now that he's Joshua's best win in 7 years.
They never picked the one that put them down or out. Braddock said Baer over Louis, Holmes said Shavers over Tyson, etc. As many have pointed out, there are different kinds of power. It is entirely possible that in some sense they are being accurate and picking the guy that made them hurt the most. But as Marciano pointed out, its not the punch that puts you to sleep that hurts.
Ruiz has a flipping nice left hook! When he throws it after the one two it is very fast snappy and powerful. Deceptive power coming from him for a physique that does not match an Adonis lol. But looks don't matter, this is the hw division not a body building contest. I can't wait to see him in the ring again!
