Give it a rest you fool.
How about Liston fighting several rounds with a broken jaw in his eighth professional
    fight.

It's completely relevant when we're discuss quality of opposition and context. Holmes said it because it was TRUE! Larry was in his mid to late 30's or even 40's facing most of his best opponents.

"Holmes did everything he could to avoid good contenders", yet he fought:

-Young undefeated #3 contender 6'3, 220 lbs Tim Witherspoon
-Young undefeated #8 contender 6'4, 215 lbs Carl Williams
-Young undefeated #1 contender 6'6 226 lbs Gerry Cooney
-Young undefeated 6'5 254 lbs Leroy Jones
    -Undefeated Prime Michael Spinx
    -Undefeated Prime Tyson
    -Undefeated Prime Ray Mercer

^Al Weil and Charlie Goldman would rather throw a rock at a hornet's nest than put Rocky anywhere near this lineup. That's the point. Holmes paid his dues and wasn't going to move heaven and earth to continue to fight men a decade younger than him if they weren't going to pay him.

It was a pretty good watch. Cockell did about as well as possible given what he had to work with. I've watched better fighters do worse in title challenges.

Nobody is claiming Rocky would succeed at heavyweight today most feel he would be a light heavyweight

But what we are discussing is fighters trying to fight the best in front of them. Cockell, as #2, is completely acceptable. Zanon, Ledoux, etc, were not.

There really is no way to spin that.

Yes, but a fighter is not obligated to fight #1 every time. #2 occasionally is really, really good.

Of course they wanted the best. We have posted the articles in these threads that show that Valdez was not highly regarded because of the Parker fight. The turning him into something he wasn't with hindsight is comical.

Back to back threads about Don Cockell is really reaching for the low hanging fruit

Anyway Marciano didnt train as much and was slipping from his best for the fight and Cockell did his homework, happens all the time

Are you new to this forum? There's more than 30 different Rocky threads where people argue for over a dozen pages claiming he'd succeed today without making any adjustments.

There really is no way to justify an era being good with Cockell as the #2.

Rankings aren't always perfect. Canelo had a mandatory who was coming off a loss!

I am sure had Don completed in the Holmes era, he would have had a very good chance of finding himself in the ring with Holmes. Holmes was not always facing the best. I don't think Don would have been a top ten contender, but he do decent I think.
