That is abjectly false. Byrd took the first round and was totally out of his depth from round 2 on. Ive heard that myth peddled many times before.

The fact remains that Vitali got beat by a badly handicapped opponent who was figuring out his gameplan in the ring.

Once Byrd adapted he began countering Vitali and making him miss. Byrd never even took a punch that hurt in that fight.

Even totally unprepared his style was clearly all wrong for Vitali.. Thats why Vitali threw away his rematch clause and got Byrd to face his brother instead.

Just finished watching this is how it was for me.

    1. Vitali
    2. Vitali
    3 - swing round
    4. Vitali
    5. Byrd
    6. Vitali
    7. Byrd
    8. Vitali
    9. swing round

So giving one swing round to each it was 6-3 Vitali for me. Interesting fight and good clash of styles.

Larry Merchant was annoyed with Byrd for constantly retreating. Go watch it. Byrd was never in that fight. Couldn't keep Ike off him.

How was the 9th a swing round ? That was Byrd's best round of the fight and he won that round clearly without debate.

I thought Vitali was also landing a lot of punches and his work was underated. But Byrd landed heavier shots.

That's just how it looked to me.

I might look at the round again. That's how I saw it though I don't really always trust punch stats.

You're definitely wrong on round 9 trust me that's objectively Byrd's best round of the fight even Harold Lederman scored that round for Byrd.

Maybe. I am not the best at scoring fights to be honest.

    Here's how i have it:
    1. Vitali Vitali landed some good right hands while Byrd just landed few straight to the body but nothing significant clear round for Vitali
    2. Vitali Same as 1 though Byrd did better and landed some decent left hand he wasn't active enough to win even though he made Vitali miss decent amount
3 - Byrd Close round Vitali landed some good shots on the ropes but mostly missed while Byrd landed some nice counter shots I'll give this one to Byrd
    4. Vitali Clear round landed some good right hands while Byrd didn't land much
    5. Vitali Close round Byrd landed some good shots but overall Vitali still out worked him and landed more shots
    6. Vitali Clear Vitali round landed some good shots while Byrd didn't really land much
    7. Vitali Same as 6 Byrd really didn't land much while Vitali landed some good shots
    8. Vitali Byrd more aggressive this round but still not super effective and Vitali starting to find a home for his right hand as well as some good body shots
    9. Vitali close People said this was a clear Byrd round but I really don't see how Vitali won the first 2 mins of the round clearly Byrd mostly covering up and not doing much at the last minute he did better and landed some good shots but then so did Vitali so I really don't think slightly winning the last minute is enough to overcome losing the first two minutes of the round
So overall Vitali clearly won 6 rounds and 3 rounds were close and could have gone either way but even in those close rounds I'd favor Vitali Byrd was mostly playing defensive and would ocassionaly land a counter shot but Vitali while missing alot was still landing good shots and overall outlanding Byrd so I really don't see this fight as close Vitali was clearly winning and while Byrd was giving him some difficuilty I really wouldn't say that he was doing enough to win rounds while Vitali was landing some good shots even though Byrd was hard to hit

How does losing 2 mins of the round then slightly edging the last minute mean its a clear round?

I don't remember most of the anecdote but I do remember that it involved a chef and that at the end of the tale, he posed a philosophical question to the room about life and what it was without a little whisk. And that small whisk is analogous to Chris Byrd.
