To be honest when you look at fight like Bivol Beterbiev this weekend I mean it's clear to me the athletic ability as well as accuracy and technique is just more advanced than it was in fights in the 40s....

Speaking of borders, Beterbiev, Buatsi, and Bivol wouldn't have even been pros in Marciano's era due to their places of origin.

But have you studied many fights and fighters of that era objectively, taking into account many factors?

Study up on Ezzard Charles, Archie Moore and Joe Louis.

    Moore was Hopkins’ idol.

Joe Louis is considered to be one of the most technically skilled HW’s of all time.

    Charles was also incredibly skilled.

There’s some good style breakdowns on YouTube.

    These were very gifted men.

Of course the film isn’t of great quality though.

The loss to Gunnar Barlund who was Beterbievs size and nowhere near his calibre as a fighter seems pretty devastating to Baers case. And his subpar performances in general against guys Beterbievs size

Where's the evidence for his power outside him being big

Yeah, with smaller gloves that walk forward with your hands held high wouldn't work as well. I could see Louis flattening him. Charles is a good fight, but I'm partial to Ezzard Charles anyway. BB would do well though, all things considered.

Yes they were exceptions I review Joe Louis as one of most crisp punchers and technicians have ever seen at heavyweight even all these years later. I think his foot speed wasn't he fastest though but he was miles ahead of his time and that's why he dominated for that long.

You need to study Charles and Moore too.

If you’ve got the interest and a bit of spare time.

I had a brief look last night on YT.

I’d not looked for a while.

    There’s some decent footage.

Some of the knockouts from them are absolutely amazing.

Those guys were just so skilled.

This is why it angers me when people say that today’s guys are superior in skill. And it’s not a claim through any knowledge. It’s just an ignorant assumption.

Even though the footage isn’t of great quality, you can clearly see their amazing technique. Their amazing speed and timing.

    Check it out.

You’ll see why Charles is considered by many to be the GOAT at LHW.

There’s no way that Bivol and Artur have skill sets on another level.

I have seen a lot of Ezzard Charles and the 40s. But there are definitely fighters of that era who I am not as well researched on as much as the old heads I am still leaning about certain fighters from that era as well beforehand.

    It’s difficult.

I guess it depends on the criteria.

For most of my life, I considered Robinson as being the GOAT.

But over the past 4-5 years, I’ve studied the life and career of Harry Greb. And what he did, was just incredible.

From what we know of him, he had nowhere near the skill set of Robinson. But what he achieved, with his stature, style and circumstances, was just remarkable.

    So I don’t know.

    It’s subjective isn’t it.

    There’ll never be universal agreement.

    What about you?

    Hi Buddy.
You make a valid point about universal agreement, I like your goodself thought Robinson was the best for decades, sure I had read articles' about Greb, but not many in-depth ones, it was only over the past 20 years or so , that I became acquainted with his career and accomplishments in their entirety, and what accomplishments they are, so he is , and will remain, I would think, my all time No1, after him you can mix in Robinson, Armstrong, Langford, in any order you choose, am happy with any perm.
stay safe Loudon, always have time for your thoughtful, measured, and informative posts, they should set samples for other posters.
    Chat soon buddy.

He doesn't...all of the great fighters of the 1940's would have eaten him for breakfast!
