I love James Toney but he's not beating Roy Jones even if he was at 100 %.. Roy was a stylistic nightmare for James if you think otherwise then tell me what could he have done different to beat Roy?

Hopkins was not green as grass, at the time they met they had about a similar number of fights. In fact Hopkins was the betting favourite to win

“Couldn’t” you’ve got an opinion maybe but it doesn’t matter. James was drained, evidence suggests it fine enough, Roy’s best win is a guy who didn’t show up.

Hey Noel good to see you! I was exaggerating because I’m chit chatting with @Seamus but really I just believe Hopkins got a lot better later he needed the RJJ fight, I don’t think he was the fighter he would become but that’s just IMO he’d only been boxing something like 5 years in the pros. RJJ was an incredible fighter and came into the pros pretty much a complete product much in the way Tyson was, he’d lived in a gym and was in gruelling training from the time he could walk it was only natural his rise and fall would be meteoric IMO.

I say this is very easy:

    Jones
    Hopkins
    Toney

Not to mention Roy beat him pretty much with one hand. But hey let's forget that and just go with the Hopkins was green agenda instead.

James if they’d fought at 175lbs or 190lbs or even at 168lbs and he’d actually showed up would likely punch with Jones, that’s how you beat him, you punch with him IMO take his speed out of the equation, let him peck, prod etc and let him get set, give him something to hit the top of your head, gloves, whatever let him hit something so he throws a right or a hook and then… I was never impressed with Jones ability to fight inside, James would maul him on the inside, he’d chop him to pieces against the ropes and he could get him there - he ain’t a stylistic nightmare IMO either, when you’re that good overall you don’t have that issue.

Jones would never ever fight Toney on the inside you're crazy if you think he would. He would fight him outside like he did and potshot his way to a victory every single time. The hand and foot speed of Roy would always be too much for Toney who was at his best against aggressive fighters who came at him and gave him openings for him to counter. Everytime anyone gave him movement he struggled. And I love James he did things nobody else did at the time but as far as him beating Roy not no but hell no.

I gave you the answer to “pot shotting” and it wouldn’t matter if RJJ wouldn’t want to fight him inside, James would do it anyway boxing is like that sometimes haha - maybe if he had the ref for the Ruiz fight he’d be fine? But truly to be serious it’s all opinions, in the real world RJJ beat Toney - was it the best Toney? That’s just more opinions, evidence suggests not but only JT knows truly.

I don’t believe that’s true, but I’m glad you enjoy what I write. I’m positive you’re in the 4x-5x range for how much more you know about our beloved sport than me, I need to study up so in 10 years I can be one of the “Old guard” lol.

Hopkins was a sizeable 4-1 underdog. He wasn't green as grass, but he was a good fighter. He wasn't the great fighter he would become, either.

I may have got it wrong regarding the betting ,however going into the fight Hopkins was ranked no 1 middleweight and RJJ no 2
