Ray Mercer vs Wladimir Klitschko Prime for Prime

Mercer very arguably drew Lennox and had a close fight vs prime Holyfield. He's more dangerous to Wladimir than most people think now

 

He was rated #17 when The Ring made an all time heavies list, I think in 2014. Somehow they actually had vitali above him at #16. Extremely generous to vitali and unfair to Wladimir

 

True and Wlad didn't have a great chin to say the least but he dominated an older Mercer. I think Wlads career achievement should grant him favouritism in this mythical match up.

 

The way I see it the Manny trained Wlad would likely win a wide UD. If its the younger more aggressive Wlad, Ray would have a good chance of knocking him out.(see Sanders, Brewster, Purrity)

 

Wlad stops him late or wins a clear UD. Wlad would bust him up again. Just an overall better boxer.

 

Mercer had NO answer for the hook off the jab or straight right that was going right through his guard. I don’t Mercer being a bit younger changing much.

 

Mercer at his best was tricky to find . The Ray who gave Lewis hell wins by KO . Mercer was a very dangerous bloke when in the mood

 

Mercer gave Lewis hell because Lewis didn't have the right punch selection to keep things long and was forced to brawl inside with the smaller man.

 

Would have to go 55-45 favoring Wlad. Mercer, as inconsistent as he was, I believe gives any ATG HW a tough outing at his best.

 

Mercer is a bit overrated, but I think he's better than Samuel Peter with less power. Klitschko wins clear decision but gets dropped once imo

 

Manny had him at #8 before he passed. I’d bet anything he’d have Wlad probably in the top 5 had he lived. Mainly because Wladimir would’ve never lost to Fury and broken Louis’ title defense record. I really think he would’ve.

Well considering how an old Holmes took him apart with the Jab i have no problem thinking Klitschko who also possessed a great jab could.. taller with more power too.. Klitschko would be a bad style match for him.

 

Wlad is a top 10 ATG heavyweight. Reigning 11 year champion. Fought many gold medalist and tougher competition than given credit for from the casual boxing fans . He was an exceptional athlete with size and power . He stops mercer prime for prime .

 

That 'Old Holmes" was an ATG with one of the best jabs boxing has seen. If it were that easy, all Mercer's opponents would have just jabbed him and won with ease.
