Styles make fights. Meldrick with his speed and peerless combos, his balance and heart, at 140 against the Floyd of the Gatti fight. Is this the match-up against a lesser fighter that foils May?
I think Floyd is too defensively responsible and wins a close but clear decision. It'd be mesmerizing to watch him try to avoid all those punches though.
I can see the logic behind the proposal that Meldrick would give him trouble. Floyd hasn't fought too many guys like that. But I still think he wins a decision.
I think Taylor's speed and especially workrate would make things difficult for Floyd, but Floyd's advantages in defense, smarts, and overall skills would carry him to a close decision win.
Mayweather is a better all around fighter, defensively, smarter, better chin, and in my opinion more talented... Floyd would bust him up and stop him late on swelling or referee mercy stoppage, and im not even close to being a Mayweather fan:-(
Mayweather is a better fighter but that is not the entire issue here. I was rewatching May-Judah and thinking about this. Granted, Judah is a SP but his speed and activity (which was less than what Taylor brought) were causing May some problems. And May does not hit like a Chavez or Norris, so I don't see Taylor getting busted up. Again, it's not about who is better, it is who would win given their styles. There is always a Norton for an Ali. I think Meldrick would have a good chance here.
Mayweather was definitely having a few issues with Judah's speed. But, Judah was such a mental midget that he fell apart late in the fight. Taylor would never stop throwing punches, and, his work rate was more than double Judah's. I think Taylor outworks Mayweather for an entertaining decision win.
One of those styles make fights situations. May Jr. probably would beat Chavez Sr. in the 12 rd distance, Chavez Sr. beat Taylor, however Taylor matches up very well against May Jr, with his speed , rapid fire combinations, and aggression and would out work Mayweather Jr.
I always pick against Floyd but I'll take him here. I understand the workrate arguement for Taylor. But floyd has 5 inches of reach on him and will be able to win this from the outside and crack Taylor good coming in. Judges pull him thru again in a very close fight
It was more the southpaw stance that caused issues for Floyd against Judah imo rather than Zab's speed (though his handspeed did help him in the early going before Floyd began to time his rhythm). Floyd always had a bit of a tough time with southpaws mainly because it meant he struggled to get his jab going quite often. But Meldrick would be there for the jab and he was rather hittable. Floyd is simply the better fighter and the smarter fighter.
I’m not saying you’re wrong, but I also think Floyd has the best record against southpaws in history.
