Jared Anderson - was supposedly destined to be the future of the HW division Hamzah Sheeraz - was being hyped as the future of the MW division Edgar Berlanga - won prospect of the year awards and they were gassing up his 100% KO ratio David Morrell Arslanbek Makhmudov Frank Sanchez Robeisy Ramirez Bektemir Melikuziev Ben Whittaker Joshua Buatsi
Indeed, no list of this sort is complete without the biggest hypejob of the lot... Wilder. Prospects like Anderson... I guess we just don't know yet - could he come back, improve and build up to where some thought he might get? Dubois was overhyped before the Joyce loss, but was then written off and underrated for a good while until he'd more than proven he belonged in the upper reaches of the division.
Mahmoudov I agree with. People always get overzealous for a powerful guy crushing cans. I don't recall Frank Sanchez getting much hype at all. He's a reasonably skilled guy who could still have some success.
Joe mesi lol, been a while since heard his name. Used to get serious hype and screen time. He seemed to me like “the great white hope” of the 90’s
Yep, basically what HBO had hopes for. He wasn't bad by any means, just not the elite HW they pushed for.
If Itauma loses soon against a gatekeeper he will be up there. Of recent years? Maybe actually Joe Joyce - he did beat some good fighters but a lot of people thought he was going to beat Usyk and be champion. Bakole was pretty overhyped as well.
