Seems incredible, only yesterday we were discussing his cultural impact on this very forum, and the outpouring of love from across the world today certainly validates his iconic position.
R.I.P George. He was such an inspiration to so many people around the world. All 5 of his sons were named after him.Astonishingly brave fighter, some of those fights in his forties were spectacular to watch and of course we all adore the Ron Lyle fight, the best fight he was ever in.
One of George's most incredible feats was winning the gold medal, he started boxing at 16 and at the age of 19 , with about the same number of fights took on a 29 year old Russian named Jonas Cepulis who was a 12 year veteran of the sport with 220 fights under his belt..And Foreman battered him! But perhaps his greatest feat was transforming from a sullen bully who never got over his loss to Ali into a wonderful , kind hearted man of compassion who performed the greatest comeback in sports history.
Foreman regaining the Heavyweight championship at 45 is more impressive than Ali being a 3 time champ IMO, it’s probably the single greatest accomplishment by an athlete ever when you really think about it considering how long he retired for before he came back.
In terms of achievements, fantastic fights he was in and his overall legacy, he is one of the true greats. The word legend can be used too often but in George's case it is entirely appropriate. RIP champ and legend.
george heard about your grandfather and wanted to join him. god speed to both of them and comfort to your family.
I remember once reading an interview with a 105 year old farmer in Brazil. His secret to long life? Smoking. Helped him relax. Smoked ever since he was a kid. i remember reading an interview with a 100yr old navy vet. His secret? Never getting married, and whiskey. Woke up and took a shot first thing every morning. extreme old age is random AF. Pure genetics. My grandma made it to age 92. She smoked, was overweight her entire life, and lived on fast food and potato chips. Never a single health problem until age 85.
I have the feeling that we lost something, that an era is gone. I think I will feel the same when Clint Eastwood will die
