Barry McGuigan and his management studiously avoided our Uncle Azumah Nelson, it was an art form.

There are several examples in the history of boxing, maybe one day we can open a topic and talk about it, it would be nice.

Turki said he wants to make the fight, but Benavidez seeing as he's no longer able to compete at 168 would need to capture a title at 175 in order to make the Canelo fight make sense at 175. That would mean Benavidez would need to challenge Bivol, but apparently Bivol doesn't want to fight him. Bivol's management apaprently would rather fight a 3rd fight against a 40 year old than fight Benavidez who's the official mandatory.

So we have fans still demanding Canelo fights Benavidez despite them being in different weight classes yet they're not demanding Bivol fight him despite Beanvidez being the official mandatory and WBC ordering that match next. Funny how that works.

Winning a title eliminator didn't make him the mandatory. He "had the right" to face the WBC Champ? The fact is that it wasn't until May 21 2022 when he beat David Lemieux that he became interim champion. He fought Plant and then Andrade in 2023 which put him into position to become the mandatory, to which he declined to enforce because he was outgrowing the weight class. He could have forced Canelo to fight him in 2024 but instead he ran off to 175. Those are the facts.

I do agree that Canelo avoided him, Canelo could have fought him but chose not to. But he wasn't required to do so at any point that Benavidez was at 168. 3 of the last 4 Canelo opponents have been mandatory defenses. The IBF WBO, and WBA are far more strict about fighting the #1 contender than the WBC. So Canelo fought who he had to in order to keep as many titles as he could to stay Undisputed. He lost the IBF for fighting Berlanga instead of Scull, but if he fought Scull instead, he presumably would have lost the WBA.

So, to review, I agree that Canelo clearly avoided Benavidez. As a fan, I wanted to see them fight when Benavidez was at 168, so it's fair to say that. But to act like he was mandated to fight him at any point is simply inaccurate. And if you're so gung ho about WBC Title holders fighting interim title holders or #1 contenders, then you should be just as upset if Bivol doesn't fight Benavidez next.

I appreciate you admitting that the facts are that Canelo avoided Benavidez. It's a matter of intellectual honesty, many Canelo fanboys don't, but then there are media articles online, there's boxrec and therefore the objective facts such remain and the fanboys can say what they want.

I think it's right to judge boxers and fights objectively, without ever being influenced by likes and dislikes.

Well why would Bud go and sully Canelos good name and screw up the fight? Of course he's going to praise the guy.

Haven't taken Canelo seriously for years. I'm really hoping Bud gives him a whooping and The more I think about this fight going down I really think it could happen.

Will you be equally outraged at Bivol if he doesn't fight Benavidez next, if he fights a 40 year old for the 3rd time instead?

Definitely. Sometimes it’s the management at fault, sometimes the fighters and sometimes a combination of both or circumstances.

Benavidez definitely deserves to fight for the WBC light heavyweight title. If Bivol faces Beterbiev in his next fight, I hope the WBC dethrones Bivol and puts the WBC title on the line in a fight between Benavidez and another opponent. I would be a hypocrite if I said anything different.

Why would he sully the good name of a fighter who has never failed a PED test when he himself is working with Mr Balco Vic Conte?

And why would he be so bereft of self-awareness to have a convicted PED cheat in his current P4P top 5 when his reason for excluding another from his all time P4P top 5 is them being a PED cheat even though they have never failed a drug test in their life?

I think he believes Manny's a PED cheat and he didn't have to badmouth either, especially considering one is a proven PED cheat and the other isn't

Maybe because he wants to go into the fight on a good note in order to maximize his gains - that's really all I have to offer on that as I'm not Bud's thought process.

As far as the Pacquiao stuff goes, who knows? Perhaps because he doesn't have a fight lined up with him so he doesn't care what he says regarding the old timers even i it contradicts other opinions. OR because Bud has sour grapes from their fight falling through.
