Did you mean Greb KO Gunboat Smith? I imagine that wouldda been a shocker. A few other candidates for this topic: Langford-Flynn 1 Dempsey-Fulton Walker-McTigue 2 McAvoy-Risko Steele-Hostak Bummy Davis-Bob Montgomery Sheppard-Maxim 1 Morrow-Moore 1 Lesnevich-Bettina Bratton-Dykes Duran-Huertas Rubin Carter-Floro Fernandez Jose Torres-Bobo Olson
Emile Griffith got stopped twice in 112 fights. Once by Carlos Monzon late in the 14th round after being beaten down. Once by Rubin Carter in one round, where he was knocked down twice and absolutely blasted out of there.
Damnit. I was going to bring up this one. I was young at the time but in retrospect it seems like it was a shocker.

I sure do remember this one. It was the first time in my life I had gambled on a guy and picked him to win; without the benefit of seeing his fights. Just read about them and there was hardly an abundance of info on those bouts. But the results were there. At any rate my thinking was the subtractions from the other guy. Neon Leon in Monaco? I sure thought we were not going to get anything close to an A+ performance. Maybe a B or C. And all that hype for Leon was based on the Ali result. Great win but Ali had not looked good in quite some time. And I sure did not like that Ledoux bout for Leon whatsoever. But now Leon--who does get hit--is in there with a hitter. Reputedly a big right hand hitter. And Leon got hit by right hands from Ledoux. Ali had pretty much lost the snap and accuracy of his right hand so it was difficult to guage that. So I bet on Leon not being 100% for the guy. And there were some bad outside the ring things going on with Leon as well. So thought he was a candidate for a loss here. Thought he would not prepare for the guy--figuring I just beat Ali and there is not much tape on this South African so it should be an easy night's work. No way in the world I thought he'd be in Ali condition & against a big hitter for the first time. Lots of assumptions. And I do not like doing things that way because just 1 assumption going wrong is enough to change the fight result.
Terry Norris Ko1 John Mugabi. It was shocking to see the beast who looked made of iron vs Hagler and who up to that point was one of boxings most remorseless knockout artists be taken out with such brutal yet laser like efficiency. Each knockdown was OTT almost video game like as John wobbled around the canvas like a blancmange on a flat plate. The final knockdown i worried Terry had killed him. Mugabi was in hindsight ruined by the Hagler fight than the appalling freak thumbing injury the same year versus Duane Thomas but had remained unbeaten thereafter through 1987/88/89 and was still a KO artist up until the bout with Terry Norris where he lost his world title. Benn-Barkley was shocking to me too. TBH up to that point t I had felt Benn was inferior to the top Americans. Although he used fouls on the floor and Barkley had recovered well the 3 knockdown rule deprived us of a long war of attrition I think Barkley would have won. Benn steadfastly refused a rematch.
I would just like to go on record as saying that this is the first time I’ve seen “blancmange” used in the Classic Forum. Nicely done.
Especially great call on Hill, never a big puncher, crushing Tiozzo, a very durable fighter, in one round.
One of the cruelest tricks of boxing history is that King Tut didn’t come along at a time when he could have used this as his ringwalk music: This content is protected
