He was 35 and had no bad losses. He wouldn't take his first loss vs a non highly regarded opponent until after Povetkin. I can't say what they thought of him but he was still a high world ranker

You would’ve had to have been there. Most of us eagerly anticipated the Chambers fight and saw Byrd as the unranked stepping stone that he was.

Povetkin losing to Wlad has nothing to do with Ortiz or Wilder though. Wlad was a dominant champ who reigned for 9 years and beat 12 plus ranked contenders and who rates in the top 10. Ortiz was never the best heavyweight in the world at any point in time and has one quality win.

It's a comparable win to Whyte beating Rivas

 

Ortiz shares Thompson and Jennings in common with Wlad. He outperformed in each instance, although Thompson had faded some.

Povetkin couldn’t have done any worse against Wlad and underperformed overall in common opponents.

 

Thompson was totally shot and retired immediately afterwards so that fight can't be seriously considered. That leaves us with Jennings when Wlad was 39 and faded. Lots of guys including journeyman outperformed Wlad in individual fights.

Nate Tubbs did better against Sanders than Wlad. Etienne did better against Brewster. Rivas stopped Jennings while Wlad couldn't. We could find plenty of examples

 

Exceptions are not the rule. Patterns tell the truth.
