Both at their best. Loughran had good wins at heavyweight but lost to Carnera. Who wins in their primes?
Patterson gets inside and lands the cleaner punches, Loughran didn’t have the power to keep him off and didn’t shorten up his punches well and he isn’t staying away from Patterson long enough to win the rounds since Patterson was great at closing distance.
It is to remember that Maxim made a green Patterson work hard,so it's possible for Loughran to edge a decision, tho I'm actually not so sure of his inside defense.
Tommy hasn’t got anything to keep Patterson off him… his bad hands… he could survive at best but Patterson probably mulches him up.
A healthy Patterson would be an interesting match up with Ali IMO… didn’t really see a good version of Ali vs Patterson… I’d really enjoy seeing Jose Torres try his luck like he wanted, wouldn’t go well but it’d be interesting.
There's a brief video of Torres sparring with Ali in 1970 when Ali was preparing for his fight with Frazier.
Imagine those fast hand's of Patterson s, those whipping hooks of his. Floyd gets him out of there before the tenth.
Loughran might have the best durability track record of any 175er ever against HWs and superheavys. He survived Max Baer, Braddock, Farr, Carnera and Gastanaga whose got the longest reach of any notable HW ever. Sharkey at his absolute best stopped him once so I guess its possible. But Loughran was not easy to put down.
