Considering neither Conor Benn nor Eubank Jr have ever won a world title, why was their fight so hyped by the boxing media?

Why do they receive so much media attention?

Both are mediocre boxers, neither is elite. Janibek would make short work of either one. No other mediocre boxers (except the grifter Jake Paul) receive so much media attention.

Truthfully both fighters are really nothing special and they're basically riding off the coattails of their fathers as well as trying to manufacture this "ongoing" rivalry through them. Surprisingly the fight actually turned out to be a good one so well done to them.

British promoters are great at hyping domestic rivalries.

You really have to admire the way they are able to pull it off - PPV, huge network attention and filling enormous football stadiums

Yet their fathers were really nothing special either. They were just domestic level boxers, not world class. Eubank was unwilling to fight in America, Benn being somewhat better with his win over Barkley.

Yet Benn lost to journeyman Thulani Malinga, and was losing to McLennan when he resorted to using dangerous rabbit punches. They both lost twice to Steve Collins. Eubank lost twice to Carl Thompson.

They both seemed to avoid the top fighters in the divisions they fought at: James Toney, Dariusz M, Roy Jones, Henry Maske, Bernard Hopkins and others. James Toney's management tried to secure a fight with Eubank I remember.

A 30 year rivalry between the old men. 2 epic fights between them. The chances of them two having two kids fighting around the same time around the same weight at a pretty good level was slim to none. Yet it turned out they did have two sons fighting around the same time around the same weight around the same age at a good enough level.

Add to that the pair of them are pretty similar to their old men even in the way they fight and their old men we,re still around to see it. A family fallout. Drug test failure. Weight regulations. Genuinely both completely different types of people etc.

A promoter probably wont ever have that same opportunity again. Pretty much a promoters dream.

Because their fathers rivalry was so iconic in the UK, it was nostalgia, the boxing fight between Chris Eubank and Nigel Benn on that Saturday night drew 16.5m viewers. This represents ITV's third highest audience for a sports event after England's 1990 World Cup match against the Republic of Ireland, and the Bruno-Bugner fight in 1987.13 Oct 1993

Hopkins wasn`t known in the UK in the early 90`s, he became a highly rated fighter in the late 90`s, Dariusz was a light heavy as was Maske.

No idea to be honest. Must have been a British thing.

Glad fight was more entertaining than what I expected. The weight drain was what made it a close fight and added the excitement. Benn visibly hurt the bigger opponent but was also swinging for the fence with every punch. While the bigger Eubank was conserving energy and when he was able to , was landing the cleaner punches.

Domestic fights in certain countries are always hyped even if they are not elite fighters they might have name recognition.
Here in Australia we get the same thing. The first fight between Anthony Mundine and Danny Green was front page headlines over here and a stadium fight. Granted in their primes Mundine and Green were both levels above Eubank Jnr and Benn and it was a world title eliminator but the second fight between them was 12 years later both were in their 40's and it was still a huge stadium fight just based on their names and legendary rivalry.

We have Paul Gallen v Sonny Bill Williams coming up later this year in Sydney they are both retired footballers who have boxed but neither has fought in a couple years. Gallen in 43 and Sonny is 39 and it will no doubt be on PPV and at a large venue. These kind of fights are the ones that attract the casual sports fan who know nothing about boxing.

British fans and media just adore domestic grudge fights for some reason.

Brits...have you not noticed a pattern?

Consider the hype and the reality of Ricky Hatton and now Anthony Joshua.
