I watched both many times, no nope. Hagler was still active and a world champion, Louis came back after a year of retirement after being already way past his best against Walcott whom he should have lost to in the first fight.
Nope. Hearns one punch ko of Duran leaving him lying face down on the canvas is the best certainty if you are only counting fights between the 80s 4 kings
I didn't score the fight. But it was widely believed he should have lost and Joe Louis thought that himself.
Joe changed his tune several times along the years but he said he thought he won. It s on tape on the The Way it was show years later.
False. Out of 85 people scoring the fight 60 had Walcott winning and only 25 had it for Louis. Joe knew he lost and gave Walcott immediate rematch.
I still think what Young Corbett III did after he was stopped by the great Jimmy McLarnin at 147 is almost unsurpassed .. aside from his brilliant WW run (126 fights) a 5'5 natural WW beating Apostoli, Walker, Lesnevich and Conn is on another level.. After his KO loss to McLarnin he moved to 160 & won almost every round against the admittedly declining former WW & MW champion Mickey Walker.. he would then beat two future LHW champions greats Lesnevich & Billy Conn.. & then finally defeat the #1 rated MW & HOFer Fred Apostoli.. Corbett is probably the most under appreciated fighter of all time. Leonard was fantastic but he wasn't a small WW & most people thought Hagler won their fight anyway. I personally wouldn't put that Hagler win* on a par with what the likes of Corbett did here. Each to their own tho..
You proved my point. 25 people who sat ringside felt Louis won the fight. Their opinion holds a lot more sway than yours considering you have never watched the fight in full. Louis rightly gave a rematch due to how close the fight was, this time he knocked Walcott out to remove any controversy or doubt who the superior fighter was.
Leonard has those three great wins, but that is not the full picture is it,he had already lost to Duran, rallied for a come from behind win to beat Hearns, and in his own words delayed the Hagler fight for years until he himself said whilst commentating on the Mugabi fight that Hagler had lost a step and he thought he could beat him now. Hagler agreed to everyone of Leonard’ demands for the fight to be made and the result is still as hotly debated as ever. Leonard then received the gift draw with Hearns in the rematch and again said himself that he had lost that fight .
Have to respectfully disagree. Duran beating Leonard, taking his 0 at 147 is a far better achievement. I’d also say Durans losing performance vs Hagler is more impressive also.
