The Heavyweight Landscape without Joe Louis,In The 1940s?

Good one,Fergy. More than likely Max Schmelling would have been the first man to have regained the heavyweight championship,outpointing Jimmy Braddock. Jersey Joe Walcott and Ezzard Charles would have started their series in the late forties. Maybe Billy Conn would have held the title for a year or two. No one man would have dominated.

 

Yeah, Schmeling probably becomes champion again and so does Billy Conn. Walcott probably becomes champion sooner but loses it to Ezzard Charles and perhaps gets it back.

 

maybe Farr might have gotten a chance and a win, Conn too as already stated, but JJW would be my Top Liner, though the Big Pole, Joe Baksi might have been a good Hope, Charles perhaps the strongest candidate, Mauriello and maybe Britain gets a long desired Punchers Chance in Woodcock.

 

You would be looking at at lest four additional lineal champions IMHO.

I also think that one likely consequence, is that either Schmeling or Baer becomes the first man to regain the title.

So who else is in the mix?

Potentially Tommy Farr, Bob Pastor, Arturo Godoy, Billy Conn, Lou Nova, Elmer Ray, and of course Joe Walcott or Ezzard Charles earlier.

You could even potentially get an outsider like Tony Galento or Abe Simon in the mix.

Think Charles and Walcott still become champions. But Walcott may have become champion sooner, around 47 or 48. Lose it to Charles in 49 and regain it later on. Billy Conn may have become champion in the early part of the 40s. In the late 30s, Schmeling probably regains the championship by beating Braddock. And he may keep it going into the 40s, but likely lose it, perhaps to Billy Conn.

 

We live in a world where a guy named Francois held the gold for a short time (till his **** test came back hot). Don't get greedy.

 

I agree with your analysis. I myself can’t make any solid predictions but I think the title definitely would have changed hands often

Interesting idea. I think the Heavyweight Landscape, with no Joe Louis, in the 1940's would not have included Max Schmeling. Possible title holders may have included Billy Conn, Jimmy Bivins, Jersey Joe Walcott, and Ezzard Charles.

If the late 30's are included, then Max Schmeling enters the picture as a possible, if he would have knocked James J. Braddock out, or at least dominated Braddock very convincingly (otherwise winning a decision in the USA in the very late 30's may have been very difficult for Schmeling). Also Max Baer would have had a shot at regaining the title, from either Braddock or Schmeling.

 

Jersey Joe and Ezzard may well have fought each other five or six times as opposed to the four they did in reality.

 

I'm thinking that Billy Conn beats a fading Max Schmeling for the title in 1940-41. The war happens and Conn leaves for military service. In 1946, after returning from the war, he fights Jersey Joe Walcott and loses the title.
