Except Sugar Ray Robinson. But what middleweight from the 50s could dethrone prime Hagler?

Man ... you'd probably have to scroll back to Freddie Steele in the 30s. Not sure that LaMotta has the boxing chops to take on Hagler. I guess Fullmer is around but then you are relying on power and that's not the way to get Hagler. A guy like Steele has natural speed and athletic ability and is mobile enough to not get drawn into the trenches with Hagler. Not sure I'd favour him, but Steele would be a stiff test.

    Hi Buddy.
In full agreement regards Steele, he would push Hagler hard, a good boxer with above average power, and tough, witness his brawl with Apostoli, another tough, resilient box puncher, who could also give Hagler a torrid night, regards Fullmer relying on power, that was not really his MO, sure he could hit hard, but his style was built around his toughness ,awkwardness, and all round durability, aligned with unlimited stamina, made him a formidable foe indeed, my thoughts on a fight with Hagler would be that he would be ground down and stopped possibly via cuts, or the refs intervention late in a 15 rounder, after putting up stella opposition.
stay safe BCS8, always have time for your informative and interesting posts.
    chat soon buddy.
    Mike.

it’s gotten to the point where I can predict when you do this. You always exclude the best option.

Joey Giardello would be somewhat of a live underdog. His style and toughness give him a chance.

He’s the most obvious so I knew everyone would pick him.

because he’s the obvious choice to any “send in your man to beat [insert middleweight here]” thread.

need to exclude the obvious ones to keep these fun. “Send in your man to beat [x heavyweight].” Ok then, prime Muhammad Ali, Mike Tyson, or Lennox Lewis, ain’t I creative? :bananaride

Vito Antuofermo fought Marvin to a draw. There’s some 1950s guys who could fight him in a similar fashion and if Marvin goes into his ‘reluctant in big fights’ shell, it’s a toss-up. Roberto Duran also outboxed him pretty well but fell just short.

I wouldn't make any 50s mw an outright favorite over Hagler, but Spider Webb may have had the closest thing to a chance.
