That's giving Sanders WAY too much credit, IMO. Judah did a lot more in his career than Sanders ever dreamed of doing..

Anyone who claims Tyson ducked Southpaws needs to produce a list of the top ten ranked HWs during Tyson's reign and point out the left handed fighters Tyson ducked...

The lack of boxing knowledge that floats around on this site is mind boggling sometimes.

[another fan] "Mike Tyson quickly gets into range and forces and exchange. His abdominal power and ironchin make sure he gets out on top. There's nothing Sanders can do to keep Tyson on the outside, and once on the inside there's nothing Sanders can do to win the tear up. "

If you are talking the Tyson that Sanders would likely have faced, the "Francois Botha" Tyson, I think not. Sanders does virtually everything better than Botha, except for maybe toughness. And Botha was roughing Tyson up, no question about it.

A "prime Tyson" is, in my opinion, a fair deal better than that version, and would pose a lot more problems.

But let us also not forget that a "prime" Tyson had some hard fights against some guys that are not exactly regarded as top flight nowadays. "Quick" Tillis had a close fight against him, close enough for some people to claim he'd won, and Tucker (iirc) went the distance with him virtually one-handed. Mike is not the absolute destroyer people make him out to be. :nono

Finally, Tyson exhibited some vulnerability to the uppercut. While Sanders had (to me) a distressing tendency to clamshell up and let his opponent get shots off so that he could explode and flurry back - something that I admit could cost him dearly against Tyson - Sanders also liked to use short uppercuts on incoming opponents with often devastating effects. Billups was despatched with a blistering right uppercut, and Rahman and Varakin were both sent to the canvas by short lefts. :bbb So, in my mind, that does make up somewhat for the stylistic deficiencies.

I think that it would have been an entertaining, if short, punch-up either way.

[northpaw] "The lack of boxing knowledge that floats around on this site is mind boggling sometimes. "

    Awesome a nalysis, buddy :-((

Corrie when he was younger boxed and moved VERY well. He had a pesky jab that he kinda flicked out and kept his opponents frustrated while still possessing a lot of that vaunted sneaky power he later became well known for. But he didn’t just solely rely on it like he did in his mid to late 30’s. The Corrie that out boxed Purrity and Tillman absolutely is capable of beating Tyson by a hard fought competitive UD. Maybe even stopping Mike late catching him with a laser left counter and then swarming Mike until the ref jumps in and saves him.

Anyone that thinks that’s not in the realm of possibility with a young motivated Sanders doesn’t know the sport.

I’d take a prime Corrie Sanders to win by a competitive UD against Tyson. Maybe late stoppage. If Douglas could do it… Sanders definitely can.

Young Corrie moved and boxed extremely well.

Corrie gets leveled 99/100 times. He has a punchers chance because of his exceptional power and speed, but Tyson had a good chin

Sanders was not a bad HW. But at the same time, nothing special due to his inconsistencies. Fast hand and some power, and his losses were to some good HWs. But Mike had too much and was too special. Tyson KOs him earlier than later.

The Tyson that lost to Douglas was already on a sharp decline, using drugs and not training at all. If we're talking the Tyson that beat Berbick and Spinks then he takes Corrie out in the first couple of rounds. Corrie is one of my favourite fighters, but he was susceptible, was dropped by pretty mediocre opposition and Tyson at his best was on a totally different level.

Tyson is overrated in the GOAT argument and then underrated by some hardcore fans who try and completely denigrate him. He was a phenomenon at his peak, and he would've been a nightmare for any era. Sanders was just a world-level guy in a pretty poor era. At one stage Tyson was ranked #1 P4P.

It is clear to anyone who actually watches fights and follows the sport, that Mike at his best would beat Sanders in a few rounds. Yes Sanders is game, with quite powerful and fast hands. However, Mike is more powerful, with faster hands and much more technically sound. He has a much greater defence and a very solid chin

Yes Mike lost to Douglas, that fight was a perfect storm, of Mike beginning to slack, underrate his opponent and Douglas fighting to his full potential. Buster had skills and is a big guy with a jab. He was very game that night. Mike fought like a man possessed in the 2 fights with Razor Ruddock, showing a great chin. Ruddock was very dangerous at the time and these 2 wins go under the radar for Mike, but they were classed as quality at the time. So the pre prison tyson beats sanders. Maybe the post prison one does too, but that is a debate

Long story short, Sanders is good, but Mike isn't Wladimir Klitschko, or even Vitali for that matter and he makes short work of sanders in his prime
