Louis could be caught and hurt by big punchers. Shavers would perhaps be the hardest puncher that Louis faced. Could Shavers overthrow Louis from the heavyweight throne and steal his kingdom?

Ernie sure could punch; but he is way too raw and disordered to pull a Schmeling on a prime Louis.

Ernie wont be able to catch Louis, who will handily outboxes him and goes for a late stoppage.

If Louis jumped on shavers the way that Quarry did it would replace the affair as the new worst day of Shavers life

    Hi Buddy.
When you say " won't be able to catch " plenty of his opponents did, and put him on the canvas, 10 times in fact, Braddock and the rather slow and ponderous Galento, being but two, so I think it is entirely feasible that Shavers could put him down, if that was for the ten count, who knows ? .
stay safe Kid, like you, like your posts.
    Mike.

Prime, focused Louis gets him out of there in a hurry.

People pick prime Mike Tyson and prime George Foreman to KO Louis, but not Shavers? What is the meaning of this?

I didn't. (Said in the tone of Doc Holliday saying "I wasn't" to Johnny Ringo about just fooling about in "Tombstone.")

This is one of those potentially, bad day Fights, for Joe.
I think, knowing how Shavers hits, Joe comes out fast as possible and lays the worst beating of a lifetime on him.

late stoppage? Quarry got rid of Earnie in one round. This one is a pretty easy night for Joe, and a really bad one for Earnie.

On averages, Louis for sure for me but can’t count out Earnie completely in terms of “possible” even if not very likely.

The Quarry fight for Shavers was bad but it wasn’t prime/best Shavers.

There’s a few fights in which Earnie started fast and very on point - vs Henry Clark II and vs Norton to name two.

Shavers could punch very sharply very early in the piece, becoming sloppy in later rounds due to stamina issues. Earnie often swung for the fences early - a risk that paid off quite often but of course not always.

Vs Ali, Earnie showed a different shade of himself again by deferring more to his fuel tank, pacing himself but picking and landing his power shots throughout all the same.

Shavers is the clear underdog vs Louis imo which is why I’m examining his less likely chances in this fight.

    Hi there,pal!

What I mean by “Ernie being unable to catch Louis”, is that Ernie would be facing a prime, determined, focused Louis, who would be well aware of how dangerous Ernie's punches could be, and therefore wouldn't be taking any chances. I am thinking Joe Louis of Schmeling II.

And yep, as great as he was, Louis didn’t have the best chin and had some issues, like dropping the jab and because his fighting style he could be rushed and caught off balance by fast swarmers. Thus, Louis was knocked down several times during his career, but he usually got up and went to win the fight, sometimes in commanding fashion.

Also, we must consider several knock downs were post WWII when Joe was already in decline, and that includes the bouts with Walcott and the infamous “fight nobody wanted but the IRS” versus a reluctant and embarrassed Marciano.

All in all, I am assuming a Louis that is absolutely aware of the danger from Ernie’s punching and prepare for that, so get a focused, nimble Louis who won’t give Ernie a chance to unload. That Louis outplays and outboxes Ernie.

    See you around.

Yeah, but Jerry was a going forward fighter who loved to brawl way too much, which sometimes got the better of him. So, yeah Jerry went all kamikaze on Ernie and that paid off ... for once.

But I am assuming a Joe Louis who is fully aware of Ernie's power and goes for a "safety first" approach, taking his time feinting and feigning; keeping his distance until he has Ernie totally figured out.

Only then, during the second half of the fight, Joe Louis goes into offensive mode and eventually stops Ernie.
