who would you pick? Louis wouldn't qualify since i believe he weighed 199 lbs for the second Schmeling fight and 207 for the Budy Baer one. My pick would be Marciano. Though Dempsey of the Willard fight has a case. Perhaps even a modern fighter like a Bob Foster or a Beterbiev.
In absolute terms and based purely on raw power, completely disregarding skill and ability to land said power at world level, Darnell Wilson has a good shout as having the most concussive, 1-punch power, whilst being sub 190lbs. P4P, it's Julian Jackson for me.
Sam Langford. It's Sam Langford. The way people describe his punching ability is mad. When Sam hit you in the body, you’d kind of look around half expecting to see his glove sticking out of your back. When he hit you on the chin, you didn’t think at all until they brought you back to life." Harry Wills "Man, if old Sam were in his prime today, what he wouldn’t do to these heavyweights! There wouldn’t be any need of judges or referee, or even timekeeper. He hit me on the top of the head and I thought the roof had caved in." Gunboat Smith "I fought most of the heavyweights, including Dempsey and Johnson, but Sam could strength a guy colder than any of them. When Langford hit me it felt like someone slugged me with a baseball bat." Jim Flynn There are loads like this. I think Louis was the hardest puncher until maybe Shavers, though obviously all this stuff is guesswork. I don't think the difference between someone like Langford and Liston would be meaningful either. I mean it hardly matters
Huge, explosive puncher, obviously way more skilled than Wilson, but in absolute terms and purely based on raw power, I'd guess Wilson hit harder.
Man, you beat me to it. When I saw the title to this thread, Stevenson was the first person that came to mind. Not sure what his in ring weight was but I would bet it was between 185 and 190. He was a murderous puncher.
Jeanette X. There's 25 minutes on YouTube, it's wonderful. If you watch it keep an eye out for how fearful Jeanette looks and how carefully he boxes. Maybe the hardest man in ring history and he is on the run from Sam. Jack Blackburn loved Sam Langford, nearly as much as he ended up loving Joe Louis. I can only imagine how it felt to realise he had another Sam on his hands. Sam and Joe both spent every minute in the ring trying to convince the opponent it was safe to punch. I think. What a strange animal to be. I'm not sure there's anyone quite like that after Louis, although Roman Gonzalez sure put pressure on a guy to make his mind up.
Although Sam was a bigger puncher of course, the quote about his shots to the top of the head reminds me of how George Groves (at least I'm pretty sure it was him) described how he thought his skull was being caved in when he sparred GGG and got hit by one of those superb Cuban hook Gennadiy loved to throw.
For me it would be Marciano or Dempsey. And when you come right down to it, for thudding power that would **** you up endlessly all night long, it's Marciano. But for early-fight, explosive firepower that would wreck you and your family with the same one punch, I reckon Dempsey is the man.
I once found a website with a large collection of quotes from guys who fought Langford. They ALL said this kind of stuff about him. It's so over the top it's absurd.
I loved the Wills quote about sneaking up on Langford and hitting him with a bat praying that you don’t miss the second swing.
