At his best Max Schmeling is good enough to stay out of Mercers way and win a UD. If he could avoid Louis in their 1st scrap, he'd avoid Ray.

What if Ray marches towards him trying to punch him?

Mercer is known for running two great fighters close. A competitive loss to Holyfield and a debatable loss to Lewis.

The other guy dominated the best heavyweight ever (or top 2 Hw whatever you prefer) for a KO win.

    I’ll take Max on points

Not necessarily .. look at Tommy Loughran v Max Baer or Jimmy Young v Ron Lyle for example.. Schmelling had the ring intelligence & countering ability to overcome the bigger stronger Mercer.

Schmeling was not that sort of elusive speed demon … he was a solid, methodical technician … look at how Max Baer overpowered him because he had the chin w the strength …

Baer Vs Schmeling was a pretty even fight until Baer landed his anti tank shell right on Schmeling's chin for good in the tenth.
That was also not a great performance by Schmeling who had put aside his patient style in favour of mixing it up with Baer. In the back of his mind he knew it was either a win via KO or nothing in a fight on US soil.
The loss to Hamas being back to back with the Baer one points to Schmeling having a bad period in his career, which he crawled himself out of by avenging one of them, beating Neusel, Uzcudun and then Louis.
He was slippery as an eel in the Louis fight, almost all the right hands Louis threw sailed over his head, he was catching hooks with his right glove, crouching, skipping off the ropes and constantly re adjusting his position.

Saying Louis was green is a misnomer. Yes, he wasn't yet at his peak, but Louis vs Schmeling 1 wasn't a case of a young, inexperienced lamb of a prospect being thrown in with a wolf in Max Schmeling by greedy promoters. Louis had already defeated 2 former heavyweight champions who were still close to their primes and did it emphatically. He had also defeated numerous top contenders. Louis was the favorite to win.

All right, let's take a deep breath here .Who exactly did Ray Mercer ever steam roll? He was getting battered until he caught the china chinned Morrison in the 5th. He went 20 rounds with Jesse Ferguson losing a UD in their 1st fight , went 10 with Bert Cooper and won a UD over a washed up 38 year Tim Witherspoon fighters who were right there for Ray to hit. His loss to a washed up Holmes who was 43 speaks volumes about his boxing ability. Max and Mercer were both 6' 1' and had virtually identical reach so it not like he's a giant next to Schmeling. But the giant in the ring would be Max's boxing ability next to Mercers. Max is a 4 to 1 favorite here and I'd pick him by UD, he's a class above Ray

Good point! Steamroll wasn't the right word. I just meant that he would physically overwhelm Schmeling.

And I don't get the hoopla over Max's skills. He was a small heavy with a little bit of craftiness and a good right hand. What am I missing?

Schmeling didn't chose to mix it up with Baer, he lacked the strength to hold him off and had no choice ... Mercer was much bigger than the 203 Baer weighed for Schmeling, much stronger , took at the very least as good a shot and likely hit close to as hard ... I like Schmeling and think he was a terrific cruiserweight and his victory over Louis is legitimately legendary but I simply see him as too small and not strong enough to hold off a Mercer ... P4P Max was better for sure ...just not H2H in my opinion.
