How tall was Floyd Patterson really?

That picture where he's in the ring with Marciano, Louis, and other ex champions suggests the same thing.

 

I'm not sure. But now that my wife has pointed out how terrible my clothes look when I don't iron them, I can't help but notice their boxing shorts look bad wrinkled up that way.

 

My record for ironing anything satin isn’t good.

Suffice to say, I steer clear of same when possible - perhaps Ali and Floyd were similarly reluctant after having been previously “burnt” like me?

 

I think Floyd might’ve actually been between 5’10 1/2 to 5’11” at very best.

All the more impressive for the bigger guys he engaged and beat.

Floyd isn’t standing perfectly straight in this shot (nor is Braddock but not as bad) but you can still appreciate that he’s dropping quite a bit of height relative to former Champ, 6’ 2 1/2” Jim Braddock.

The official "tale of the tape" releases usually gave Patterson's height as 6 feet, but sometimes as only 5'11", which I'm guessing is closer to the truth. He did have a kind of habitual apologetic stoop which made him look shorter than he was.

Like a lot of people with self esteem issues, I think Floyd “carried” himself small and a bit slouched; 5’11 becomes 5’9” pretty easily.

 

Well when you read quotes from Patterson and evaluate his expressions, mannerism, and how he carried himself, it's obvious he lacked confidence and didn't want to draw too much attention to himself. The way someone thinks of themself is often written all over their face and in their posture.

I also heard that slouching can lead to a compressed spine and shoulder/back issues. This could be why his corner was attempting haphazard chiropractic maneuvers in the first Ali fight.

Assuming Frazier is around 5ft 11.5ins and Ali around 6ft 2.5ins, this photo supports your 5ft 10.5ins to 5ft 11ins estimate, at most, for Floyd -

No chance Floyd was 6ft.

 

There aren't many boxers/athletes who are as tall as they claim they are. I know this from my experiences with people in real life as well people always want to be taller.

There are a rare few cases like the Kiltschko brothers were they are actually as tall as listed.

 

AJ and Lennox Lewis are also as tall as billed.
